So many people filed for unemployment in NY that the calls crashed the system. 10,000 calls per hour... WOW.

The state Department of Labor, which oversees unemployment insurance claims, received more than 10,000 phone calls an hour on a toll-free hotline Tuesday, leading to the crash. The department’s online claim filing system also shut down under the volume of traffic it received.

Double WOW, North Carolina Jobless Claims Overwhelm Web Site. I don't know how you guys say doing nothing is the right thing to do. People are hurting and hurting bad.

Unemployment is up so much in North Carolina that the state's Internet site for benefits crashed twice this week under a rush of claims.

The number of people trying to sign up online for new or continuing benefits was as much as triple pre-recession levels Sunday and Monday, the Employment Security Commission said. That volume, together with a phone line problem, overwhelmed the agency's computers and prevented some people from filing claims. (See pictures of the stock market crash of 1929.)
