    Actually most states did have such laws until fairly recently; Breach of Promise, and I believe is still on the books in Ky. Based on English common law and not a bad thing at all.

    Are you saying that if you and I were engaging in a private conversation and I lied to you that used to be a violation of the law of the land?

    No, the law was based on breaking an informal promise, as opposed to a written contract. All laws are ultimately based on right vs wrong. Some have just fallen out of favor.

    Of course, it is against God's law to lie even in private conversation.
