    Sorry If I Offended You

I truly apologize if in any way I broke BB Rules, or, offended you (rbell). I am responsible for things that I post, and according to the Bible, if I offend even one person, and cause them to stumble, I have committed a sin.:tonofbricks:

If I tripped you up, or, anyone else with that commonly used Texting abbreviation, I am truly sorry, and should the Moderator choose to remove the post, I fully understand. However, I did not intend to offend anyone, nor did I mean to mock my Lord and Savior.

So, please forgive me for my ignorance in this matter....:praying:

    Pastor Paul:type:

Thanks for your words. I'm sensitive to that particular abbreviation...we've been talking with our youth lately about it.

    Thanks again.

Here is the portion of the speech referred to in the youtube video from Dragoon68's link. The bolded portion is the section in the video and I've provided a little context.

Obama makes a good point that is evidenced by many threads found in this very forum. How do we apply scripture to politics? What passages and theologies do we consciously or unconsciously accept and reject in the process of developing our political frameworks?

I also agree with his call for people to read their bibles and not let politically motivated "theologians" from any persuasion (left, right, up, down) tell them what scripture says.

The foundation by which he tries to make that point is in deep error. He has no clue what scripture says or suggests. He is lost as the day is long. I have never seen a politically motivated theologian. Can you name a few?

Sorry, but that is not the way it works. God has one Holy standard. He is not all over the board without direction. Just because man fails to perceive God as He is, does not mean God is all things to all people. It means man is flawed. (Duh). For example, the Lord left us with one church in Acts. Over the last 2000 years, we have managed to split into thousands of groups because we think everyone else is wrong. That alone should tell you we do not know what we are doing.

Since my mind is flawed like everyone else's, it is not within my power to pick out from amongst the many pieces we have created which is right or wrong. All I can to is to trust the Lord to lead me to the place I should serve him, learn from prayer, Bible study, and believers at the local church the Lord has placed me, and submit to the authority of that church. That is God's clear direction for my life. Only God can lead through the mess we have created.

Getting back to Obama (what business he has telling anyone about their faith is beyond me), he is very, very wrong for the following reasons. He puts forth a message of a disunified message of the Bible. It is not only unified, it is without error, and can be understood to the degree the Lord allows us to understand through the Holy Spirit. The message of the whole Bible is a unified story about Jesus Christ. The next error he makes is not to listen the pastor of your local church. That is totally unBiblical. We are to submit to the leadership of the local church once the Lord puts us there.

The best thing Obama can do when it comes to people's faith is shut his mouth.

I cannot think of a politically motivated theologian. I can think of some that I thought at the time were too involved in politics, Jerry Falwell for one. He had a good message, a great school, and did lots for the Lord (more than I ever will). Also, there is nothing wrong with trying to elect Godly leaders, but it seemed to me at times he was obsessed with it over the Gospel.

But no, I cannot think of one politically motivated theologian. I would assume a man called by the Lord to pastor or teach would have higher standards than to hob nob with thieves.

Theologian according to Webster "a specialist in theology" don't know that much about Falwell but not sure he fits the definition.

Chafer, Calvin, Hodge, Strong, Miley, etc. fit the definition of theologian.

Read the speech in its entirety. It's obvious that the OP snipets are nothing more than snippets lifted from their context. The snippets in their context are by no means what the OP claims them to be.

some people believe the bible does not apply to all of a christians life, only the parts he wants to apply it too, meaning God isn't really their 'god' at all.

Maybe They Are Snippets, but I call them Nuggets!

They be snippets, Johnv, but, they were snipped in the right spot to allow us to hear the gist of what he is saying [without having to weed through his fluff]. We all know that speeches are filled with fluff to build up to the key points. The key points were the ones that the video cut to...we know that Obama has a worldly view of the Gospel message. What he needs, just like a great majority of so-called believers is a Gospel view of the message. A view that doesn't pander, or, give into the sin of mankind.

We have become "Gradualists" when it comes to the Scripture. Just the other day, our paper covered, on the front page, a group of witches in a nearby city. They made a comment that stuck in my throat. They told the reporter that they were excited that the church was now receptive of their beliefs, which has helped them to grow to more than 130 witches in less than a year. They also praised the church for accepting same sex marriage, and ordaining these folks into the ministry.

Furthermore, it bothers me that a local pastor quoted not only from the Bible, but from the Koran at a local illegal immigrant rally.

What has become of the church? It has gradually morphed into accepting and tolerating the beliefs of cults and groups that openly advocate life's of sin.

How sad, but, it was foretold by the Prophets of old....

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul:type:

Contest, context, context. They were snipped at the right spot to give the impression that the OP claims, but a contextual application within the speech demonstrates that the OP claim is in error. I've read the speech as a whole, and watched it as a whole. No such mocking takes place as alleged by the OP.

The question suggests you haven't read or watched the address as a whole.
The comments are a response to the idea of legislating scripture, which asks the question of whose brand or application of Christianity should one use, as well as which verses to apply. That's the context of the comments, and in that context, they're not mocking, as the OP claims.

One might disagree with the comments made in Obama's speech (I disagree with several), but to make an accusation of "mocking" is a completely false accusation in the aforementioned address.

It's absolutely mocking IN CONTEXT. He obviously does not understand Scripture at all because if he did, he would know the true application of Scripture. I don't know of anyone today who argues that we should have slavery because of Scripture or that we should stone our children. But there are lessons to be learned from that - and by his saying what he is saying he's showing me that #1: he doesn't know the God of the Bible, #2: He doesn't have the Holy Spirit to enlighten him to the Word of God and #3: is ignorant regarding the Scriptures. In any context, it's mocking - no question about that.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Obama wasn't mocking scripture, he was referencing passages in scripture that are often misused and misapplied. In fact, Obama was mocking those who misuse scripture as a basis for their positions. This seems to be more of an issue with Christians not liking the fact that Obama did so, and not an issue of Obama "mocking" scripture.

There are many reasons to be critical of Obama. It's not necessary to rely on the invented issue of "he mocked scripture" to be critical of Obama.

Would YOU say the same thing about Scripture that he said? Would you ever tell anyone who believes in the authority of Scripture that we don't apply Scripture because there are some places that say things we're uncomfortable with? No. Because a believer does not do that. An ungodly man would. End of story. Whether he meant it as a way to mock the Scriptures or not, bottom line is he did.

I'm sure I can think of a several times on this board where I've pointed people's error in application many times, and been accused of mocking scripture. I'm sure you've likewise been accused of it as well.

That's not what was done. And yes, if someone wants to apply scripture by asserting that the scripture should be legally codified, I'll show them from their application of scripture why you can't and why you shouldn't.
