.....Although nearly one-third of American women will have an abortion by age 45, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a respected New York research organization, the number of abortion providers dropped from 2,908 in 1982 to 1,787 in 2005. Eighty-seven percent of counties in the United States and 31 percent of metropolitan areas have no abortion services. ......

Opposition to abortion has numerous other apsects. According to the GI, abortions declined worldwide between 1995 and 2003 by 4 million. Also, the percentage of child-bearing aged women having abortions dropped from 35 per thousand in 1995 to 29 per thousand in 2003.

What's of interest, though, is that abortions in countries where abortion is legal declined more greatly than in developing countries.

The study does not differentiate between elective and nonelective abortions. The GI has in the past generally estimated nonelective abortions to make up as little as 2% of all abortions, while other estimates such as CDD and NIH place the percentage as high as 10%. This means that up to 90% (or more) of abortions worldwide are elective.

I believe more than 90% are for convenience or belated birth control.

Correct. 90%+ are for reasons that are not medically necessary (hence, they are elective). By definition, that means that 90% of abortions are for personal convenience. If not immoral (which it is), that's in the very least irresponsible.
