The story of eroded dignity and atrophied self-governance is not one of heavy-handed national usurpation. Municipal, county, and state officials have willingly ceded their power to Washington in exchange for secure cash flows and insulation from difficult yet necessary political decisions. Federalism and subsidiarity were not stolen from us. We gave them away.”
