Yes it is. In my area of Knoxville, most of the Baptist churches are baptist in name only. They are psuedo baptist at best with more or less Church of God theology and hymnology. This is true of not just IFB but SBC churches and other Baptist strains as well. No congregational singing. No Scripture reading (you don't see people with Bibles). Very entertainment based. That probably comprises about 2 out of 3 of the Baptist churches in my county in the metro area. Go down I-75 30 minutes and that number falls drastically. It's like living in a different world

WOW!!! And around here, all of the Baptist churches are really very sound in most things. I have to say that I was surprised that we had an IFB KJVO Baptist church but then again, the Baptist church associated with the Christian school my brother went to was VERY fundamentalist. The school didn't accept my brother at first because my father still attended the Catholic church at the time.

But what you're talking about would be more like ..... our mainline denominational churches except the music - they are still very hymn oriented around here. But no Bibles? Yeah - any of the Methodist, Presbyterian churches.

And, lest we ignore our own problems, about 87% of the Landmarkers are co-located with the COC

Please notice my tongue in cheek--but that theological arena would make you one of the most Calvinistic guys around there:laugh:

If you're too embarrassed to tell them that you're Baptists for fear of offending them, how on Earth are you going to preach the Gospel to them, which is the most offensive of all?

Nope - You misunderstood. We are not ashamed of being Baptist but if in our culture it will not even let them cross the threshold, then what? Do we stand with a label in a name (and it's not written in Scripture that we're to have Baptist in our name) and prevent a bunch of people from walking in the door to be able to hear the Gospel? If the Gospel will offend, that's certainly not our problem. We will unashamedly preach the Gospel to all who we come in contact with and we have done what we are to do according to Scripture. But to set a stumbling stone so that they won't cross our threshold, that's a different story. In Long Island's culture, Baptist has a very bad reputation, unfortunately. So while we are Baptist, it will not be part of the church's main name (as I said, in all documentation, on our website and such, it will be clearly labeled as a campus of Northport Baptist Church.

    Moderator's Warning

Please keep a respectful tone. Fellowship forums have gotten increasingly strident, and I have no stomach for it.

We're not afraid of offending them - if we can actually get the Gospel to them. We'd like them to be able to atleast cross our threshold before they make a decision about them. We're an unabashedly Gospel-preaching church. There's no way they could get away without hearing the Gospel. But since "Baptist" isn't part of the Gospel, we can drop that from our name without denying Christ, can't we?

The way I understand her explanation it is precisely because they want preach the Gospel that they are trying not to limit their efforts because of a label. If placing the name Baptist on a building is in fact going to be a stumbling block in their efforts in preaching the Gospel it just might be wise not to do so.

And you really don't think they'll find out sooner or later that they're Baptists?

    ...as I was saying.

Anyway, I'm glad you see that my purpose in posting here was to point out that it's disingenuous to try to trick someone into listening to you.

double post? Now you go back and edit your original, inflammatory post and lie and say it was a double post? It's too bad for you that two of us already quoted your original post.
