WOWZA!!!!!

What's sad is that the rest of the church didn't get a raise (although I wonder what THEY make) but this guy gets $11,500 housing allowance a MONTH?? A maid? Private school tuition? Incredible.

Nothing in the story about the congregation's median pay. New York City is an expensive place to live. Most are either on the rich end or the poverty end of the curve.

How does your pastor's pay compare with yours? My pastor's is probably within 10% of my income.

Monthly housing will be covered in a housing allowance. By law, it cannot be higher than the cost of the actual housing.

You certainly do not need $600,000 to make it in NY even if you didn't include housing. The fact that housing is a separate bill makes that number absolutely assinine. It doesn't have to include school costs (since that's a separate bill), transportation (that's also separate). That $600,000 will be for clothing, extras, food, etc. You certainly can get away with far less than that to live in NYC.

Only a tiny group in the leadership has details of the contract, he said.

If this is true, they have a case.

If it's not, they don't. They have to live with their collective stupidity.

According to the article, the church has dual affiliation with the United Church of Christ and the American Baptists.

Maybe, the Baptists should leave and reinstate their congregational authority

Along those lines, the church would have a hard time paying that kind of compensation without the offerings to fund it.

I wonder if any of the 'suers' have any grasp of the concept of "finding a different church" if they do not like this?

I'm fairly sure that one can find at least two or three others in New York County.
