This quote was posted on the thread about the hijacker.

Recently, this event happened, in which a young lady died after kissing her boyfriend who had eaten peanut butter on toast nine hours earlier:

Girl Dies from Peanut Butter Kiss

Peanut allergies of this sort were only 1 in 100,000 until fairly recently. For some reason, it's been on the rise. Many doctors think that this (and other food allergies) result from "babying" our babies when it comes to food. Instead of Gerbers, we need to be feeding them Mexican and other normal foods.

However, in some places, entire school districts have banned all peanut products being brought on school grounds. In other places, entire schools. Other places provide peanut free rooms. Some places provide peanut free tables.

Some schools have started permitting those with such allergies to carry their shots with them in case they need it.

    Thoughts and opinions?

BTW, since this is currently in the new, I put it in the news section, but since it does contain opinion, if a moderator wants it moved...

I had no idea that deadly food allergies were as prevalent and extreme as that. To die from a kiss - how tragic!

The other morning, NPR played an article about peanut allergies being cured, not just treated, by allergy shots.

My mother was allergic to celery, but that was easily avoided by never eating commercial salads. She also had an auto-immune disease, Sjorgen's Syndrom (similar to Lupus) which my sister has inherited.

Too little is known about the causes of food allergies, but exposure does seem to have a bearing.

One theory for explaining the rise in allergies in developed areas that is gaining popularity is the hygiene hypothesis which I believe holds a lot of merit.

Allergies are overreactions of our immune systems. The hygiene hypothesis proposes that the rise in allergies like peanut, asthma, etc in developed societies is a result of an underworked immune system in the sterile environments we create.

The baby food and the underworked immune system seem to go hand in hand. Apparently we need to make sure our kids eat more mud.

One problem I have with the knee-jerk reactions of banning all peanuts is that it is still relatively rare (even though it is far more prevalent today than just a few years ago). Are we supposed to ban everything that can cause that type of reaction?

Moreso than strained peas, I'd think.

If someone has a deadly peanut allergy, its bound to get them sooner or later. How can you get through life without ingesting a peanut?

By knowing what you eat and avoiding commercial foods, especially baked and fried goods.

Our youngest daughters friend and neighbor, an eleven year old girl, died last summer from a candy apple cooked in peanut oil. She complained to her mom she tasted peanuts and that was about all she said. She died about 15 hrs later but never had a chance, the Drs. said.
