If Democrats were to take control of the House of Representatives after the November elections, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her party would “amend the [U.S.] Constitution” on the “very first day” to overturn the Supreme Court’s “Citizens United” decision.

President Obama said he supports a constitutional amendment to reverse the ruling and keep undisclosed corporate contributions out of elections.

She is not delegated by the Constitution with that power. She can only attempt to start the process. Unfortunately, most Americans probably don't know this and will take her word for it.

Unfortunately, too, many if not most Americans don't care enough to learn the constitutional limitations on what she can do. :(

Pelosi is making her intentions known. Few, if any, of her intended target will ever check out and see how this turns out. They also know little about what it takes to amend the Constitution.

At this a constitutional amendment about campaign finance reform is sorely needed though impossible to accomplish.

Congresswoman Pelosi is a troubling figure, if for no other reason than she claims to have Constitutional knowledge but demonstrates she doesn't know the Constitution on many occasions. She also isn't a good representative for the Democrats but that isn't the issue. However, I understand the underlying point.

Campaign finance in this country is out of control and not anywhere near the ideals of the founders. Of course our current country has become the exact thing we revolted against in 1776 so I don't know how biting that criticism is anymore.

The Citizens United case is a harbinger of a scary trend in Constitutional cases. I'm sorry, but corporations are not individuals. They may be made up of individuals, but they don't have electoral voice. The Supreme Court's decision was a poor one imho. It extends the free exercise clause too far.

We need substantial campaign finance reform if our country is going to return to the ideals of its originators. All, yep all, soft money contributions should be eliminated. No candidate should be able to provide personal income or personal loans to their own election campaign. The only money which should be able to be raise should be hard money contributions. All other contributions are unlawful and disqualify a candidate prior to or after their election.

One of the greatest challenges to our electoral process is the flow of money to candidates and the resulting influence on legislation that brings. (I'm also in favor of high regulations on lobbyists.) Though many previous generations had the sensibility to not become corrupted by these financial obligations it is clear our present leaders do not have their common sense or decency. We need drastic overhauls to the system.

The Dems may or may not gain or keep control of the House and Senate. But in both houses they will lack the 2/3s majority needed to pass Pelosi's amendment. And then there is the 2/3's of the States agreeing to the amendment.

Thanks for the good news. I support an amendment which simply states that corporations are not persons.

Is she also going to stop this, too?

Is she going to stop donations using prepaid credit cards from unknown contributors from unknown locations?

It will be interesting to see how she manages acomplish this, simply by returning her to power in Congress. A Constitutional amendment requires the following agreement by the House, Senate and the states.

The Constitution may be amended in two ways. The standard device, used for all amendments so far, is for both houses of Congress to pass by two-thirds vote a proposal, which they send to the states for ratification, either by state legislatures or by conventions within the states. An amendment is ratified when three-fourths of the states approve. The Constitution also authorizes a national convention, when two-thirds of the states petition Congress for such a convention, to propose amendments, which would also have to be ratified by three-quarters of the states. http://www.senate.gov/civics/constitution_item/constitution.htm#amendments

If not done carefully it will end up so businesses cannot own property or protect its assets legally. It will also make so that they cannot be taxed. So be careful what you wish for.

That is, of course, assuming Obama forces it on us like he does everything else. Maybe Pelosi will get her on tsar-ship?

What has Obama forced on you? Nothing.

insane debt

no, the president does not directly control the budget etc but we'd have to be blind to not know the authority they have, especially with their party in control in congress. Not to mention Obama's insistence in naming tsars and massive amounts of executive orders.

Wishful thinking.

As usual, Pelosi lives in a fantasy world.

It won't happen. The constitution will not be amended for this. Bank it.

Obama has proven he does not care what the Constitution says so why would he bother amending i? He could just do another executive order.
