CDC calls on Americans to wear masks to prevent COVID-19 spread
In an editorial published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), CDC reviewed the latest science and affirms that cloth face coverings are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19 that could reduce the spread of the disease, particularly when used universally within communities. There is increasing evidence that cloth face coverings help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others.

“We are not defenseless against COVID-19,” said CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield. “Cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the virus – particularly when used universally within a community setting. All Americans have a responsibility to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.”

Fauci urges governments to be 'as forceful as possible' on mask rules
"I would urge the leaders -- the local, political and other leaders -- in states and cities and towns to be as forceful as possible in getting your citizenry to wear masks," Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during a video conference with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

"Physical distancing is the most important, but practically when you're living your life and trying to open up the country. You are going to come into contact with people. And for that reason, we know that masks are really important. And we should be using them. Everyone."

White House's Birx urges mask use where COVID-19 rates are rising
White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator Deborah Birx urged the use of masks among people living in counties and metro areas where more than 5 percent of COVID-19 tests are positive.

“We really believe (in) ... the uniform use of masks in all metros and in all areas with rising new infections, particularly counties and metros with over 5% positivity,” Birx said in a video panel session for a COVID-19 conference organized by the International AIDS Society.

Surgeon General Urges Widespread Mask Use
Surgeon General Jerome Adams on Tuesday implored Americans, and young Americans in particular, to wear masks as lawmakers and public health officials increasingly seek to break down partisan barriers about the use of face coverings.

"Wear a face covering when you go out in public. It is not an inconvenience. It is not a suppression of your freedom. It actually is a vehicle to achieve our goals," Adams said during a briefing with members of the White House coronavirus task force.

"It adds to your convenience and your freedom because it allows us to open up more places, and it allows those places to stay open," he added, holding up his own mask. "This mask, this face covering, actually is an instrument of freedom for Americans if we all use it."

Well, I erased the long, long post I wrote. [I hate it when I do that.]

I just do not understand why wearing a mask has boiled down to Democrats do and Republicans would not if it saved their immortal soul.

I wear one in certain places - church, grocery store, doctor's office - and if others don't, that's their choice.

I wear the mask not because I think that it will protect me from anything, but that people around me may feel less threatened if I cough or sneeze. Personally, I think the mask is a placebo.

I had a box of masks from last year. My son had gone to the doctor, had a virus, abd was given a box of masks in case he had to be around people so that he would not transmit the virus to other people.

They do the same thing for the flu. So I do not understand why people are bewildered that masks are recommended.

The difference is that we do not know if we are contagious.

Maskerade: COVID-1984 and evidence-free compulsory masking

W.H. Kellogg, M.D., infectious diseases expert and then-executive officer of the California State Board of Health, made this rueful, brutally honest 1920 observation on the failure of masking to contain rampant influenza spread during the devastating 1918 influenza pandemic:

The masks, contrary to expectation, were worn cheerfully and universally, and also, contrary to expectation of what should follow under such circumstances, no effect on the epidemic curve was to be seen. Something was plainly wrong with our hypotheses.

A century later, plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose – the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The current much less lethal coronavirus COVID-19 epidemic (i.e., 100-1,000X lower death rate than the 1918 pandemic flu) is clearly waning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is poised to declare its epidemic phase over after 10 consecutive weeks of declining COVID-19 mortality, which has markedly reduced the virus’ U.S. weekly death toll. Despite these hard, objective outcome data, recent bipartisan, coercive admonitions for compulsory masking have been pronounced by Democratic Party presidential candidate Joe Biden, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Today’s hectoring rhetoric and accompanying national, state, or local mandates notwithstanding, 100 years after Dr. Kellogg’s frank lament, there is still no controlled evidence that supports masking, especially in non-health-care settings, to attenuate the epidemic spread of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19.

The daily death rate from Covid-19 bottomed out near the end of June and is on the upswing now and gaining.

The CDC says there is new evidence that masks work.

And there is just as much evidence, maybe more, that they don't. The CDC has been so wrong so many times on so many things, it's very hard to consider them a reliable source.

The death rate is not even close to the Spanish Flu the writer is comparing it too. It's not even in the same ball park

Add that to the fact nobody, and I do mean nobody, has any idea how many people have contracted Covid nor how many have even really died from it. We may have millions of people that have had it and recovered without symptoms and have never been tested. Even the tests are miscounted and there may have been thousands upon thousands of false positives.

So the death rate is meaningless. Too many mistakes and lies all around.

I never said it was. I was talking about this statement from your article:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is poised to declare its epidemic phase over after 10 consecutive weeks of declining COVID-19 mortality, which has markedly reduced the virus’ U.S. weekly death toll.

The death rate has bottomed out and is now climbing, it's not declining.

<Snip stuff about death rate which is not what the OP is about. It's about people urging the public to wear masks.>

It will climb until we have arrived at having a total natural immunity among the population. That's what happened with the deadly 1918 Spanish flu. There was no magic cure, nature took it's course and then it was basically over.

Unfortunately, we'll never know if they really work. It's become political. Once that happens it becomes emotional.

I remember when the SG came out and explained very clearly why masks could potentially be problematic for the wearer. I remember when Fauci said the same thing.

I remember when people started wearing them, the first thing I noticed were people constantly touching and fidgeting with them. I wondered then, if they would be germ catchers for most people.

To this day, while I wear one in public in-door places, I wonder if their effects are beyond negligible.

Fauci in one interview said society needs to permanently change, he said no more handshaking should be allowed, then suggested social distancing forever will be on people's minds. And he has said expect more lethal epidemic viruses in the future.
This guy is 80 years old and has had his life, and now it seems to me, all these older people who are telling us what to do, are the ones scared of dying from whatever next virus comes along.

Hey, I'm 83 & think this "mask wearing" fiasco is at least 99% political. I do wear one when in a store simply for the "comfort" of believers, or if that particular one requests it, but I am certainly not upset if someone else decides to go maskless. This is a hill I'm not gonna die on!!

I have major problems with wearing a mask - with my breathing.
In addition I will sweat profusely, and get horrible headaches - in just a short period of time.
and that is with a face covering - that I keep about an inch from my mouth and nose.

Have been talking to very many people in the past 3 months that also have trouble wearing masks.

I really feel for people that have trouble breathing with masks. Especially people required to wear them at work. I have heard that some doctors are concerned about health issues that can arise from masks, particularly breathing problems.

Well, you haven't said anything about the OP except quote a 100 year old assertion that masks didn't do much to stop the Spanish Flu. I think we've learned more about viral transmissions since 1920.

Then the article you cited claimed the death rate from Covid is declining, and it clearly is not. So I don't put much stock in what you posted. :Roflmao

And neither you nor the articl make any better case for wearing a mask than the one i posted does for not wearing one.

    Basically it's a stalemate.

All we know for sure is that Fauci, the CDC, the WHO, and the Surgeon General all said masks were ineffective and not needed before they did. Apparently their original statements were just outright lies.Their credibility on the subject is shot, as far as i'm concerned.

Bottom line is that , for every study or article you can post touting the effective of masks, I can post one that does just the opposite. We've been lied to so long and so often about so many things, I no longer believe anything they say.
