On July 11, the Pew Forum on Religion in Public Life released the results of a survey in which the American public was asked whether different occupational groups contributed “a lot” to society’s well-being.

The results clearly showed Americans’ respect for the journalistic profession has nosedived during the Obama era. Among the ten occupational groups listed, approval of journalists dropped the most in the last four years.

Four years ago, 38 percent of Americans approved of journalists; that number is now down to 28 percent. Women have dropped in their support of journalists from 46 percent to 29 percent. The plummeting approval for journalists is bi-partisan; Republicans/leaning Republicans are down eight percent and Democrats/leaning Democrats are down 10 percent.

Thanks for the post. I think the distain for the occupation goes much deeper than politicians. Of course, in the area of politics and government, the news media treats a President differently according to the agenda of the media. Kennedy got pass from the press in both morality and governing mistakes. Nixon on the other hand, was grilled from day one by the press. As soon as Watergate broke, they could smell blood.

The only reason that Clinton was hounded by the press is because his actions were so outrageous, they had no choice. Obama is also getting a pass as we speak. If Nixon or Reagan had been in office during say the Benghazi incident, it would not just have faded from the newspapers. They would still be screaming the headlines until the next election day. The Obama story has yet to be written. There are several scandals haunting him at once, some Nixon type. If they all converge at once, it could be like Clinton, the media is forced to report the stories at some point in time.

Not to derail the thread, but the most disgusting things the media does is inflate or fabricate a story for profit, power, and control. For example, the Zimmerman case was a local story. The national media made it into a circus to drive the headlines. These type of cases happen every day somewhere. The media does not really care about the fate of either of the two young men in the incident, they care about their bottom line, power and money.
