    Story LINK

Colleges should pull out of the NCAA and form a new organization and allow the NCAA to go into the dustbin of history where it belongs.

I cant really understand why American Indians would be offended by these mascots, Maybe some on this board of Native American descent can help me. Braves? Warriors? Seminoles? Chiefs? I think its flattering. Whats next ban the "Fighting Irish"?

I'm sorry but this has gone too far. This verges on 'graven images' or 'idol worship'.

The Fighting Whites basketball team was organized in early February (2002) by a group of Native American and non-Indian students of the University of Northern Colorado with the intent of playing intramural basketball. They came up with the "Fighting Whites" logo and slogan to have "a little satirical fun and to deliver a simple, sincere, message about ethnic stereotyping."

Here is a link to the store where they sell their clothing with the "Fighting Whites" logo:

    Neat!

Next, we need to organize a "Fighting Blacks" team, and then a "Fighting Browns" team.

That would be really cool! [IMG]

I wonder if it has occured to our "red" friends that their joke might actually gain a following from Aryan Brotherhood/KKK types. "Fighting Whites" is exactly how they want to be viewed.

Oh well, to each his own.

I wonder if they feel we are hurting the image of cougars at UH by using that as our mascot? We lose so many games, it makes it look like cougars are rather pathetic animals. [IMG]

I personally am insulted by the Black Arts Festival or Black Music Awards, etc. We'd have major problems if we tried to have an all white arts festival downtown Atlanta!

That's the problem as I see it, Diane.

I think that it's fine for people to celebrate their heritage, race, etc, but they should not look down on others who want to do the same. The only way to truly have a complete end to racism in this country is to either allow all groups to have their own festivals and awards without being look down upon, or to do away with these groups altogether.

I wouldn't mind the Black Music Awards, etc if they didn't mind if we had the White Music Awards, etc. There is a double standard, and that is the reason that those hypocrites are viewed the way they are. They scream for equality, but they don't want us to be equal with them. The sad part is, we let them do it!

I wonder if the University of Indiana won't be allowed to call itself Indiana under these rules?

What if those who do volunteer work are offended by the nickname Volunteers for Tennessee?

This whole thing is nonsense. Schools call themselves by a nickname that they take pride in. Such names are not a slur at any group. They are meant to be a source of pride.

Couldn't believe this was true when I first saw it.

    Madness - sheer madness.

I would be honoured if a college called themselves the University of _______________ Fighting Short Fat Bald Guys.
I'd love to have the T-shirt.

Well, if a reference to Indians is offensive then the flip side needs to be addressed as well - teams called Cowboys!

And in what is clearly a slap at the poor, there is a NCAA Division II school thirty miles from here called the Muleriders, which I imagine is offensive to those who can't afford a horse.

The Indian issue is one that gets thrown around a lot. I believe it is purposely done to persuade the public that the Indian is discriminated against so that federal dollars can be dispensed, or special privileges be granted (casinos) to salve our collective conscience.

GOOD NEWS:: UNC-Pembroke is the only school in the nation exempt from a ban on Native American mascots in NCAA tournaments.

The school I got my BA from, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, is being allowed to keep its "Braves" mascot ( see story ). The school is the only one of its kind in the NCAA. Why? Because the community of Pembroke (heavily Indian) is proud of the school and likes the name. Also the school started as a Indian school.

Btw, UNCP is a great school. It is small, compared to the other UNC schools, but it is growing fast (and I mean fast). It enjoys a great faculty and a wonderful atmosphere. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Martin.

If a college such as Florida State makes the NCAA basketball tournament I wonder if the television announcers during Seminole games will be banned from referring to them as the Seminoles and only allowed to call them Florida State.

Well using that logic, Florida State started as an all girls school. Hmm. (Florida Gator fan here lol!)
