Priest in Britain Advises Congregation to Shoplift

A priest in Britain is under fire Monday for advising his congregation to shoplift in tough economic times, the Daily Mail reports.

Father Tim Jones, a 41-year-old clergyman at St. Lawrence Church in York, England, said that shoplifting — rather than prostitution or burglary — is sometimes the best option for poor people struggling to make ends meet, according to the Web site.

Wow. Why didn't he offer to let his congregation help? I didn't read anything in the article that said he was willing to help the poor himself, yet he advises them to shoplift. Amazing.

Shoplifting is generally unwise. Trying to pick up an entire shop and liftng it over your shoulders is likely to cause undue back strain.

I guess if they are homeless and need shelter and food for the night, shoplifting might land them in jail for a few hours, if they want to get caught.

The married father-of-two insisted his unusual advice did not break the Bible commandment 'Thou shalt not steal' - because God's love for the poor outweighs his love for the rich.


'I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses, knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices.

'I would ask them not to take any more than they need, for any longer than they need.'

Liberals use the same kind of rationalization when it comes to ignoring scriptures clear teaching against homosexual sin as well.
