Winning bidder spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a 15½ inch tall stone figure of Bible-clutching churchlady sculpted by William Edmondson:

1930s limestone statue 'Miss Lucy' sells for $324,000 at Knoxville auction

"'Miss Lucy' was fashioned after a woman who attended the United Primitive Baptist Church. Edmondson also attended the church....the woman died around 1930."

"'Miss Lucy' was sold during Case's auction of more than 800 works of art and antiques....museums, art dealers and collectors, competed to buy the statue."

"'Miss Lucy' hasn't been seen since it was exhibited in 1964 at the Tennessee Fine Arts Center at Cheekwood. Cheekwood has a large collection of Edmondson's work. In Knoxville, the University of Tennessee's McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture has...'The Preacher'....His work is also in other museums, including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C."

Preach It: Edmondson Sculpture Leads Case’s Auction At $540,000

Bible-Waving Pastor
Edmundson - Copy.jpg

"KNOXVILLE, TENN. — An iconic William Edmondson limestone...led the winter Case antiques auction on January 25-26....His carved limestone depiction of a bible-waving pastor in this auction was the sale’s top lot, chased by eight or nine phone bidders and finishing at $540,000....The sculpture is well documented, having been photographed in Edmondson’s Nashville yard in 1941 by Edward Weston and exhibited at the Tennessee State Museum (1981) and the Frist Art Museum (2006) in Nashville."
