Can't we let the old threads die? Especially this one! [IMG]

I agree Petrel. Especially when the person doing the 'bumping' has no comments to add.

You guys really think that 17 pages was enough to really get into the nitty gritty of this all-important issue?

  6. Yeah just one of those threads I have written on where I hardly even said anything. But according to someone else that isn't true [IMG]

Sure got a lot of responses though I figure it would with all the IFB

Not throwing rocks but simply a logical question: What happens when the dresses come back into style as they do from time to time? Do you wear pants to not look like the world?

I know many people who wear dresses but you would NEVER mistake them for being Christian. I also know many more who do not wear dresses and they could not possibly be mistaken for being worldly.

The issue boils down to modesty and logic. I will not allow my daughter to wear a dress when I know that she is going to be doing a lot of running and playing. It becomes very immodest because the dress rides up or flies up depending on the style. If you are going to be in an office setting, wearing a dress is fine. If you are doing a lot of bending and stooping and lifting, it is not very logical to wear a dress.

Ultimately, we are to understand that God gives different convictions to different people to reach all different kinds of people. Basically, if we are modest then we are conforming to the principle of dress as given in the Word of God.

    no jshurley,

the issue is not so much to not look like the world, as it is modesty.

We can look very worldly in the wrong kind of dress, too. Isn't THAT for sure!

(no comment to RFW about her prejudice against IFB)

We have discussed this topic many, many times over the years.

It's one of those topics that people usually 'agree to disagree' on.

As Thankful said, the archives are FULL of threads on this topic.

BTW, modesty is not just an issue with IFBs. It is (or should be) an issue with ALL Christians.

Well, folks, I went shopping to buy a new dress. I like to wear dresses. Do you know what? I could not find a dress. skirts, yes and mostly flimsy things for young girls, but what I would call a "go to church dress" I can't find.

Now I used to make my own dresses, but I don't want to do that any more. So right now, it would be helpful if someone would just tell me where I can buy a dress. [IMG] I will gladly wear it instead of pants.

Try Thrift stores and Goodwills, Thankful.

If you are a discerning shopper, as Im sure you are, you can find some very nice, classy dresses there for only a few dollars. Seriously, they are about the only kinds of stores that still sell dresses that adult Christian ladies can actually wear!

Sometimes Kohl's sells some nice dresses, too.

While I like a good bargain, I do not shop for clothes at these stores. I leave the clothes for the ones who need them. ;) I donate clothes to these stores. [IMG]

I've never been to Kohl's, but they have nothing online.

On second thought, maybe I should change my attitude if I want a dress. [IMG]

I donate to our local thrift shop, "The Pink Shutter", but then I also BUY most of my clothes there. ;)

It is the only place I can find dresses long enough or blouses that are not see-through and that cover the midriff.

I think I will 'splurge' and actually buy a brand new outfit for my grandson's wedding though (if I can find one). I know I'll have to go out of town because we have nothing like that in Lincoln. :(

I buy hubby's work clothes at the thrift shop because he gets them greasy or tears a hole in them right off the bat!

I buy Brent's play clothes there because, well because, he's a little boy. [IMG]

I figure I can get a good bargain and donate back to the community at the same time...

We have several resale shops in town. I buy grandchildren's clothes there, but I have yet to find something for me there.

I have been shopping online, but can't find anything online that I like.

We have a resale shop in town too. I had forgotten all about that. I've never been there, but will go there first when shopping for my 'wedding' dress.

Thanks for reminding me of that, Thankful!

Thankful, you might just find something at the smaller shops in your "downtown" area. (If you have one) I've found that often the major retailers only carry the current "fashion" instead of a wider selection that allows a person to select what represents thier own personality.

The smaller individually owned shops will somestimes carry different things as they buy only for themselves and can buy what reflects best for their business. This is the way it is in our town anyway.

Or your could head to your local fabric store and they will have the names of dressmakers in your area. Expect to pay as much or more than you would for a store bought dress by the time you pay for fabric and labor.

I run into a lot of people who think custom made and homemade are the same thing and don't expect the cost to be the same as store bought. They just don't add in the labor and then say "Well, if I'd of known it would cost that much, I'd have bought it in the store!". Takes all the control I can muster not to say "DUH!". I now warn my customers ahead of time that if they can buy it to do so, I'm only here for what can't be bought.

Mk, you are so right about custom made and home made. There is a great difference. The word professional comes to mind.

We have lost most of our little stores to the big stores, but there is a ladies outlet store that I am going to try.

    Artimaeus, great post!
