    Soccer in America is a “rich white-kid sport,” former U.S. women's team goalie Hope Solo said Wednesday.

    “We have alienated the Hispanic communities. We have alienated our black communities. We have alienated the underrepresented communities, even rural communities," Solo said, according to Sporting News. "So soccer in America right now is a rich white-kid sport.”

    “Then we have to ask ourselves, ‘Well, no wonder why we are not qualifying for the World Cup, when we have alienated a huge population of really talented youth soccer players.’ And that’s the state of the game right now.”

    Hmmm...let's see...

    1. The cost to participate is a pair of shoes and (possibly) a soccer ball.
    2. How do blacks and Hispanics in poor countries afford to play soccer?
    3. Outside of playing to stereotypes, how does she know the blacks and Hispanics that are not participating are "really talented youth soccer players"?

    Those comments ignore history, of course. In many nations, soccer is THE sport and draws many of the best athletes. In the US, other sports have a lead of many decades on attracting that talent. Though we had (brief and simple) soccer instruction when I was in elementary school - Casey Stengel was managing the Yankees at the time - the kids with whom I played were into sandlot baseball and football, basketball, and ice hockey on the local lake in winter. There's a far greater emphasis on soccer today, but the other sports still draw far more adherents and participants.

    We have a star soccer player from our area. He was not rich (though he probably is now!). This is a mostly rural area, and the soccer competition draws heavily on the Hispanic community.
