The number of Americans who lack dependable access to adequate food shot up last year to 49 million, the largest number since the government has been keeping track, according to a federal report released Monday that shows particularly steep increases in food scarcity among families with children.

I'm sorry, but there's no way that 1 in 6 Americans are going hungry.

I'm not celebrating that any are, but when you make up bad info, as our gov't has done, people quit believing you.

While I don't doubt that some people in the United States have the need for more stable "food security" (that's a funny term imho) when you take our level and definitions of "food security" and match them with the world at large you see a completely different scenario play out.

Basically, from what I understand, by their basic definitions health experts predicate their report on 3 squares a day 7 days a week. By that estimate 85.5% of the world population doesn't have "food security."

This is certainly an example of over amplifying a problem and allowing the media establishment to further propagate an agenda behind faulty and ill defined statistics.

Editted to add: I did some more reading on this and I really think the report is based on a faulty metric. Notice this last paragraph:

In the survey used to measure food shortages, people were considered to have food insecurity if they said that answered "yes" to several of a series of questions. Among the questions were whether, in the past year, their food sometimes ran out before they had money to buy more, whether they could not afford to eat nutritionally balanced meals, and whether adults in the family sometimes cut the size of their meals -- or skipped them -- because they lacked enough money for food. The report defined the degree of their food insecurity by the number of the questions to which they answered yes.

Under this metric I would have to answer yes on more than one or two questions. Sometimes Mrs. PJ and I get busy and don't have time to go to store. Or we forget something. These government reports are often based on assumption of calendar/resource stability that isn't real world. I think this is the case here.

I don't think this many are going totally without food, but some are, food keeps going up, and from all apparences it's is continueing, each week I see new higher prices, a few items at a time, and the packages are now smaller with less in them, for more money, and it's climbing. So as things are right now, more people are going to go hungry.

Jesus was in the desert for 40 days - then he hungered. People may say they are hungry - but they really aren't. They may desire food, but in reality they are not (truly) hungered.

There are countless government and social programs for people to access food. One problem is that some folks do not know how to properly prepare food. Another problem is that many folks just plain waste food, and throw much away.

How many other examples can we give.

I once had a "beggar" come up to my car and request money to eat. I told him "hop in and I will take you to the Rescue Mission for a free meal" His reply "I'm not going to eat that crap" IMHO, he was not hungry!.

I've seen men who didn't eat but one meal a day, yet had a refrigerate full of beer. So, even if one in six are "hungry," my question is why are they hungry?

Also, one in six is an extremely high number, It's hard to accept that over 50,000,000 Americans are going hungry. In fact, I don't believe it at all!

Typical liberal hogwash.

Most "hungry" people lack proper nutrition, not food. There are very few "starving" people in the USA.

It appears that the media will use any measure to try to convince us how "bad" we have it.

I wonder how many of them have big screen TVs, Wiis and multiple Ipods?

Good point. We have a family in the church here who consistently complains of not having food, but the reason is that they have gone deeply into debt to buy big people toys and fix up their house, as well as feed three collies. They have received counseling but rejected it so they will just go hungry by their own choice.

with so many out of work now, and jobs harder and harder to find, some of these eople used to have jobs and take care of themselves, so it's reasonable they own things like a tv, wii and other 'toys'. Not everyone having trouble getting food blew their money on 'toys' and beer, for some it isn't mismanagement of money, but not having money at all. You can't judge all needy people based on a few bad ones.

From what I've seen on this board, christians have no comapssion at all for poeple who really are needy, and they seem to think just becasue they have plenty it must mean everyone else does too, or it's simply laziness or blowing money on beer and drugs. It probably wouldn't hurt to actually get to know whats really going on in these peoples real world.
This si exactly why we have never asked a curch for help, even back when my kids were little and truly were needy, we knew we'd run across this kind of attitude instead of caring people.

Donna,

Our church probably does more than most to help the truly needy. We have a food bank at the church and also give help with utility bills. The folks that I am talking about just do not know how to handle money properly.

25 years ago my wife and I were in the same boat. I had a job but no insurance and our youngest son had medical problems that required occasional hospitalization. We were $16,000 in debt. Some of that was foolish wasteful spending on MY part. Thanks to God and some good counseling we were able to pay all of that debt off and start fresh. Needless to say I personally have learned my lesson and we now have a surplus and live frugally.

My heart goes out to those that suffer through no fault of their own. But for those who refuse to obey wise counsel and continue to spend foolishly- woe.

Maybe if they read scripture enough they will begin to understand:

Then you have misunderstood. No one argues that there are no needy people. But reject the liberal attempts to use the few who are as a political tool and then exaggerate the numbers to gain office. Like the propaganda crabby likes to propagate.

You missed her most important point. Read it again and ponder what she said.

You have seen no such thing.

What you have seen are Christians that deeply distrust a federal government that won't hesitate to post phony numbers to increase their control over all our lives.

If I had been asked the same "questions" they asked of others, I would be included in their phony numbers as "hungry". Believe me I don't miss any meals I don't want to miss. The survey was loaded to get the result they wanted.

My church runs a food bank and turns no one away. Any member that needs help will soon have their pantries full to overflowing. All they have to do is let someone know they are in need. If I was truly "hungry" , my church would be the first place I'd go...and most likely the last. No others would be necessary.

Have you done that? By your post, I suspect not. Give your Christian brothers a chance. It will be an eye opening experience.

Or you can continue to wallow in self pity and slander your Christian brothers without cause.

If you are in need now, even though I have been unemployed for the past 4 months, send me an email and I will make sure you don't go hungry. Many others here would do the same.

And just when they had me convinced that obesity was the plight of children in America. . .
