Should Christians STRONGLY support the 2ND AMENDMENT?

My question is--should we Christians strongly support the 2nd Amendment: The Right to Bear Arms?

My reason is, if your rights to own guns are slowly eroded, you Christians over there would be "easy picking" by leaders who would persecute you for your faith.

If the only reason the 2nd Amendment exists is to protect yourself from "persecution" then it is unbiblical and anti-christian. If you want to say it is to protect yourself and your family from criminals that may be one thing. If it is to protect you or your family from religious persecution, that is another. And it is wrong.

True. But that is in the context of defending your state. Not true in defending against religious persecution. And I'd agree with you on the key words being "well regulated militia".

I have to go so far and ask why there is a worry about securing a free state? Isn't the allegiance over there to the United States of America and not to one's individual state? Weren't there a bunch of free states back at civil war time before they were forced into the country?

We agree, my point is that the 2nd amendment was not designed to allow the killing of federal agents who may be involved in religious persecution.

Actually, it was. Remember the situation when the Bill of Rights was passed. We had just won a war of independence from a tyrannical absentee ruler. The "state" in question is not our state government, or our federal government. The "state" is the people, and those who were to be protected against were tyrannical rulers such as we had just fought a war to remove.

The purpose of the 2nd amendment is to keep the people free from a tyrannical government.

But not from religious persecution TCassidy. If that were the case it would be anti-biblical. I don't want to get into a fight here but I do want to understand something. How was the method used to start your own country not that of a traitor? You rebelled against your leaders and fought a war for independence. If people in your country wanted to do that now, many of you would label them traitors.

I would say one exception is self defence. I hope we will never see the day when we had to protect our and our childrens life and members from the state, but it could happen.

C4K, how about Detrick Bonoffer and the plot to plant a bomb on Hitler's plane? That is a case of killing the "HEAD FED".

I say buy as many handguns as you can afford. And carry it concealed by getting a permit. I recall one incident when a crazy solder was in a restaurant near Ft. Bragg and began killing people- he killed 7 or 8 and wounded several others. If one person would have had a ccl the story could have been dramatically different.

What was it that Jefferson said, something about Fear the state that fears the people.

Jefferson answers that when he says in our founding document "in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to disolve the bonds that bind them to another" (thats not an exact quote). He goes on to explain why we were justified and therefor not traitors. He would say that King George was the traitor having betrayed the colonies.

And Jefferson denied the deity of Christ, His miracles, and His resurrection, as well as all of the Bible except his chosen excerpts. Hardly an authority on a Christian's response or a Biblical view of the 2nd amendment.

I agree with you there, but he is an authority on why we dissolved the bonds with mother England. I was answering someone else. I did, however, ask you one question I was quite intrested in. How do you feel about Bonhoeffer's actions?

Ok, Jefferson would say the King was the traitor. But according to the King, Jefferson was the traitor. And in my understanding of nations and loyalty etc., especially the way Americans define traitors, is that Jefferson would have been the traitor.

Mind you, I'm not putting down your country because you were born there. You ARE an American. But Jefferson was a traitor I believe. When people rebel against their native country and leave to start their own, doesn't that make them a traitor? If the south were to attempt that today, what would the north do? Let them? Or call them traitors and go to war with them?
