I didn't say only, you added that to what I did say.
I got it from Jesus that we are to focus first on our ownselves before others sin.

Yep. They can preach about our pants and hair and make-up and even about us keeping silence in the church. . .but don't dare mess with our rollin' pins and iron skillets!

Out of due respect for the poor op, whose thread has now been hijacked, I make a motion we riled cooks take our frustrations to the games forum and have another food fight.

(Sorry, Christianyouth, I'll stop wrecking your thread now.)

    I thought I would add, that I believe :

    1. Sin is a hindrance to joy
    2. Gluttony is a sin
    3. Therefore, Gluttony is a hindrance to joy

    Personal responsibility

I think that if a preacher often uses expositional teaching, eventually every topic will be covered. Our pastor generally does expositional sermons, and we have had these two topics covered as the text allows.

There is some personal responsibility here, though, on the part of each believer to be renewing his or her mind in the Word. Sermons which stress the importance of personal Bible study each day, with a sincere seeking of "How does this Scripture apply to me" would be a good practice.

I'm trying to disciple a woman in the church right now, and it is really difficult...I desire so much for her to have a closer walk with the Lord, to turn from sin, but no matter how much encouragement I give it is still her personal choice to respond to God's Word. So, I pray for her daily that God will finish His work in her.

    Your sis in Christ,
    Beth

Going to the buffet doesn't make one a glutton, it just appeals to the glutton in you.

Just as using the remote control doesn't make one a sloth, it just appeals to the sloth in you. (Where's your incredulity for that example?)

*sigh* The indulgence of any sensual appetite can figuratively be called eating. Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness. Prov. 30:20

    But . . .

The accusation against Christ had nothing to do with prostitutes. Christ was called gluttonous because he attended banquets with publicans and sinners. (Luke 5, Luke 19)

gluttonous: (Strong's # 5314) phagos. A voracious man. From 5315. To eat, literally or figuratively.

You strike quite a different tone in Superwoman's threads. http://www.baptistboard.com/showthread.php?t=53593&page=7

You're all over her like flies on dog poop concerning her divorce, but here you will not allow anyone to say anything about gluttony without first coercing a confession of sin on his part.

    Why is that?

Food isn't sinful. The inordinate desire for food is sinful.

Back on track now that my skillet is safe:

I think gluttony is more than just a "desire" (however strong) for food (or whatever). My personal belief is that it moves beyond wanting to wanting it ALL at the expense of others and then making a waste of it.

Greedy, but evil greedy to the point that one thinks "well, if I can't enjoy it no one will either".

Now if one can be lazy at the same time, you have a monster in the making.

You are right here! Preaching about a specific sin doesn't insure that people will stop committing the sin. I totally agree.

    Here is a question

Is it possible for someone to be a glutton(or to routinely engage in gluttony) and also be a routine faster? Or to fast, would one have to not be glutinous?

Fasting may be the way to heal gluttony...

Gluttony is a symptom of the root sin of selfishness...and greed
"I gotta eat all of this because I want it all!"
    "I gotta have it all...."

Selfishness is a symptom of Pride...
Thinking you are better than others... and you deserve something more than they do...

Soooo.... when we fast, we are depending completely on God...
When we learn to do this, we will not be selfish.

When we admit that God is sovereign, and we are not in control, we will submit to God, and will not be guilty of the sin of gluttony.

If a person is a glutton because they are afraid it is not going to be there tomorrow... and they realize that God is in control, and will provide for them, the reason for being a glutton goes away.

Just a reminder- gluttony TODAY means excessive eating but it DID NOT MEAN THAT when the Bible was written!

Discussions about eating have NOTHING to do with biblical gluttony.

Even with Dr. Bob's insight, I still feel that fasting can heal "gluttony"...

Dr Bob, do you have any idea how the word became known as eating too much and getting fat?

Here's an idea... perhaps... a real fat guy was standing outside in a windstorm and his belly was jiggling from the wind... and someone said, "Hey, Look, Joe Sixpack's (a new term of mine since the debate Thursday :) ) belly is shaking in the wind".... You know... zalal! lol

Just double checking what Dr. Bob said... (because I am a good Baptist) and found this verse... where Zalal is used... to mean "riotous eaters"

So there is the idea in the Bible that Zalal can be used when talking about food... although it most definately doesn't always refer to food.

    Proverbs 23:20
    (20) Do not join those who drink too much wine
    or gorge themselves on meat,
