I was always spanked in private. Also, no one else but my mother and father spanked me. They did not allow it. The school actually respected it. All my teachers knew, the principle, etc. If I did something that warranted a spanking then one of my parents would do it. They didn't like the idea of a teacher doing it.

I went through a bad faze when I was a teenager but I was always respectful of authorities and was really nice to others. It was always the extreme cases when I got spanked. My kids are going to be raised like I was. Not like my wife was (though she did turn out well). In her family its all or nothing. They believe that anyone of blood relation can spank a relative. Its weird. Its alot different than mine. Then again my family was small.

    In Christ,

We were hit anytime, anywhere and for any reason. Also, face got slapped in public, etc.

The last time my mother hit me was with a broom handle and dust pan. I was almost 19. She was screaming at my brother. I was ironing a dress for a 'graduation tea'. When she screamed, her false teeth flew out of her mouth. I laughed as a reaction and ......

    Diane,

    That's horrible. That's abusive.

I don't have children of my own, but if I did, I would use spanking as one limited method of discipline for the young child.

My parents were like Diane's mother. They whipped us for any and all reasons.

As a result I am very hesitant to spank my own 3.....but occasionally it has to be done.

Case in point: Yesterday T and I were working on electrifying the backyard fence. The youngest two volunteered to help out carrying brush created cutting the bushes back from the fence. Since they are only 6 and 9 and there was a lot of brush I sent one of them in to tell Precious (12) to come out and help. I was ignored. Sent in again and still no response. I'm getting a bit miffed at this point so I send in the youngest one more time. "Tell sister to come help right now, tell her if I have to come in after her she's going to be in BIG trouble."

I knew when Precious recieved this message because I could hear the screaming all the way down by the fence and I have a huge backyard.

When Precious finally dragged herself out of the house she recieved some much needed attitude adjustment to the tune of a hickory switch. She then got to work off her what was left of her attitude by dragging the brush all the way to the front yard, by hand, for the city to pick up.

The change was amazing. Three licks and a little hard work and I had my Precious angel back.

Sometimes it just has to happen.

Amen Gina, as a private investigator I can tell you that it is very dangerous to admit spanking in today's climate. My mother's switch that did nothing but sting for a while (and made me a better person) would be considered abuse today because of the red stripe it left on my leg; although in a day or so it was gone.

I wouldn't advise that you speak in public at ll about spanking; however, I must say, if we are Christians we are supposed to stand up for what is right, so I guess I am now contradicting myself.

Some states have even passed laws concerning spanking, and many judges have upheld it.

A judge upheld a woman slapping her 16 year old daughter on the face after calling her mother the "b" word. This might not happen in your state, but I would say this child either had problems that were not addressed early enough or was not raised properly.

A friend of mine's daughter (then 14) called her the 'b' word and got slapped for it. The child reported it the next day to the school counselor. The mother was arrested and charged with battery of a minor. The mother ( God bless her) made the child accompany her to each and every court appearence. She also made the child sit right next to her in court. The mother explained umpteen times, often in tears, to the judge the how and the why of it all. The judge finally agreed and dismissed the charges. But not before the child repented in tears before the whole court room. Glad to say, mother and child have a great relationship today. Child is about 24 now.

I have had to spank my son only once. He never forgot it. My granddaughter also only once. Some kids just learn quick. Me?....well it took more than once... [IMG]

My parents were strick especially after my 16 yr old sister ran off and got married. I wasn't allowed to date until I was older but I don't remember but getting one good whipping and it was because I talked back to my mother. She was and still is the matriach of our family even though she's 85 yr. old. She brought us up in the church and so did my dad but he did not discipline as she did. He would get mad and sling himself around but didn't really discipline me as I was growing up. Now he put fear in my two sisters who were older but my oldest sister would stand up to him. That is one reason we believe she ran off and got married at such an early age. They have been married over 45 yrs now so I guess it was meant to be. My dad did mellow over the years and he passed away in the summer of 2003. But that's another story. I myself took after my mother and tried to make my children behave. I saw too many being allowed to run wild and I wouldn't have that of my children. My two boys were pretty good boys but did require spankings from time to time, usually because they were fighting but even when they were little they got spanked. I used to use a wooden spoon and every time my mother came to visit (we lived in another state) she would hide it from me. This is a woman that made her own children mind but when it came to the grandchildren, she was much more lienient. My youngest son was killed in an accident when he was 12 so I don't know if my discipline would have done him any good but my oldest son, I have said, I didn't hit him hard enough. He has matured now finally at the age of 34 but we have been through some rough times. I now have custody of his child and we have a "miss Clara" which is one of those old paddles that had a ball and rubber band on it that you hit up in the air. It works wonders and usually all I have to do is ask her if I need to get "Miss Clara" so we can have a talk and that usually does it. So my answer to spanking is absolutely. I don't believe in abuse but a good old fashion spanking never hurt anybody.

My parents had eight children (5 of them boys) and we deffinately got spanked. They also used the peach tree switch sometimes. As a result of all that "abuse" we learned to respect our parents and never spent any time in jail or in any kind of trouble. I spanked my son because nothing else would work. Time out and being sent to his room were great times for him. He loved being in his room reading or drawing. I couldn't even pay him to do chores or clean up his toys, but a swat on the hiney worked wonders. It also hurt me more than him because I usually burst a blood vessel in my hand when I spanked.
Some of my nieces and nephews were never spanked or disciplined much and have become alcoholics and been in trouble with the law.

    Spanking works when done right.

One question: If spanking is violence, how come children who have never been spanked have become so much more violent than those of us who were spanked? We are living in the most violent and permissive society we have ever had. Seems to me like a little more spanking would have changed some of that.

When I was growing up there were six of us kids, three boys, three girls. Being the oldest, I got a majority of the blame for things and was spanked quite often. My parents used the belt, their hands, etc. In my teen years, some of the beatings got so bad that I actually went to school with welts across my neck, face and arms where the belt had hit me when my parents gone ballistic. The then overseer of Peoria Christian School wanted to call social services, but I convinced him that it would only make things worse for the other kids. My parents usually spanked in anger. It finally ended for the most part, after my parents moved to Georgia and my brother threatened to call the police on my father. It was only my youngest brother and sister and Mom and Dad then.

That's not fair, you need to come clean! It's funny but mother was the only one who spanked, daddy just got mad and acted ugly.
I used to spank my boys with a belt when they got older but I wrapped the stupid thing around my legs instead so it was me who got the whipping. I finally made them lie on the bed and then I would whip them. You have to be careful with those belts - they are killers on the bare legs.
One story about my children I would like to tell. I played the piano in our church in Aiken, and my children always sat on a certain row every Sunday - the same one I sat on when I fnished playing before the pastor preached. One Sunday I came into the church when the choir did and one child was sitting on one row and another on another row. Well I couldn't figure out what was going on so I motioned for them to come and sit on the row they were supposed to sit on. I found out after church that my two wonderfully behaved children had gotten into a fight, down on the floor fight right there in front of God and everybody and a friend of mine broke it up and made one sit on one row and another on another row. I told her it was a good thing she did because had I walked in and saw them fighting, I would have had to tell everybody to wait just a few minutes to start while I go whip my chilren. I can't remember if they got a whipping when they got home or not but I'm sure I punished them in some kind of way. Children need discipline - or how else are they going to know what's right or what's wrong.
OK Blackbird - what's your real name????

Bonnie56, I see you're in North Augusta, SC. My wife's family is from Augusta, and I have two sisters there. Do you go to Larry Browns church?

We have visited there a few times and my husband was a member there before we married which was 6 yrs ago. My granddaughter goes to school there and is in the first grade. It's a good church. Different than most but I like it. We are members at Belvedere First Bapt. and also like it but are thinking maybe we need to change. My family is at Belvedere and my son who had not stepped foot in a church in many many years started coming after my dad passed away in Aug. 2003, so I kind of hate to not go there. We might be able to convince him to visit Victory though.
