Baptist Seminary President Paige Patterson Fired as Files Go Missing in Sex Abuse Case

"It's not clear yet whether or not Patterson will step down from delivering the keynote sermon June 13th during the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting in Dallas."

"Ed Stetzer has been one of the prominent Southern Baptist voices calling for Patterson to step down from giving that message....Stetzer told CBN News on Thursday that Southern Baptists must grapple with the failure 'to hear the voices of women'....He also called for a hard look at the ways that complementarianism, the view that men and women have separate roles, has mixed with misogyny and harmed the denomination."

Can Patterson still give that sermon even after he was canned?

As I understand it: Yes. The convention (the assembled body) nominates and chooses the next year's speaker by ballot. Therefore, no one can stop him from preaching. HOWEVER... He can decline to preach or the convention (in the business preceding the giving of the convention sermon) can vote (by ballot) to dis-invite him. In either case, an already-voted-upon (I think) "back up" will preach the convention sermon.

    Blessings,

    The Archangel
