It means that if properly viewed the Cinco de Mayo could be considered a joint celebration. It was part of enforcing the Monroe Doctrine only without American troops getting involved. With interference by an Alien Space Bat, Maximilian defeats Juarez and his Nationalists. He then leads his victorious Imperialists north of the Rio Bravo to recover Mexico's lost territories.
It is after all a faux holiday. In Mexico, it is not a national holiday. It is only celebrated in a few of the States. In the U.S., it's promotion was started by XX Brewing in the Texas, AZ and New Mexico barrios to sell beer.
Further, as I have read in the local papers, the school administration had requested prior to the 5th that no flags be worn. It didn't matter if the flag was US, Mexican, or Estonian.

I'd say cut them some slack.
Give the Latino citizens a chance to assimilate.

Below is a website of the St. Anthony's day celebration in the Italian North End of Boston where I grew up.
There are as many if not more American flags than the flag of Italy.

Italian-American citizens are patriotic almost to a fault and totally assimiliated.

It was not always that way.
Same for many other ethnic groups in Boston like the Irish-Americans.

Out here the Italian holiday is Columbus Day. Then Columbus Avenue cuts right through the heart of San Francisco's traditional Italian neighborhood. Then there is St. Patrick's Day, a traditional day of Irish nationalism. In SF, IRA men have been the grand marshal for the parade and the Chicago River runs green. By the by, in San Francisco we have history of Irish illegals.

Whether the garment is worn for Pride or Intimidation is a matter to consider. You have the right to wear a red suit into a bull ring, but be prepared for the reaction from the bull.

Unless the school has a strict dress code of no symbols on clothing, then they better be prepared for my reaction!

Isn't this like assigning guilt to the rape victim for dressing a certain way?
