Of all the people to choose to make an example of, why jail this student?

I'm really disgusted. I see students who hate to be at school, don't care if they're late, and do everything to run away during school hours to ditch and go make babies and get in gang fights.

So yeah...let's find one who does better than almost every other student AND is living without her family AND is working her tail off to support others at such a young age and throw HER in jail to teach everyone a lesson!

I hope the judge's stupidity works in favor of this girl and people step up to give her a hand. Sounds like she wouldn't NEED one if he left her alone. She's working hard and making her life into something. That is a GOOD example, imo, compared to the average teenage sense of entitlement and thinking the world owes them a favor just because they're breathing.

Punishing hard work. This should be the poster story for how hard working people are treated like dirt in this country. Keep people down and dependent on the government and you have a government in total control and a nation of citizen's with no sense of pride or duty. It's happening so fast...it's so very sad.

Why is a high school girl working to support her brother in college? Mistake number one.

Why is she working to support her sister who lives with relatives? Mistake number two.

These responsibilities should not fall on her. I am having trouble believing that these responsibilities are real. But if they are they need to stop pronto.

Once the judge warned her changes should have been made in her life to comply with the judges orders. Mistake number three.


Having said all of that schools do not like missed attendance because it effects the income of the school. Then heaven forbid school administrators could not get their salary increase which is already at six figures.

This poor girl is fighting for her own life and is getting it from all sides. The judges order should stand and someone needs to help this girl get her priorities set straight. This problem goes way beyond the judge's order.

Why shouldn't she? Why do we expect so little of our teens? It's absolutely ridiculous. We limit them with our low expectations and even make laws to keep them from being able to help support their families if that need arises. We teach them from the beginning to not be a giving part of their families or towards society, then call them burdens and leeches when they're suddenly 18 and can't figure out how to make their own way and be productive.

It's an odd phenomenon in American society. One day we're expected to practically wipe their rear ends for them and everyone screams bloody murder or child abuse if a parent doesn't coddle the kid and let them spend all their spare time playing, take away any sense of respect for elders, then everyone is standing there wondering why our young adults are so irresponsible and expect everyone to take care of them and have no respect for the next authorities in their lives.

Why should she not work to make her way and help her family? It would be nice is she didn't have to, but she does so she's doing it. She learned early that life is tough and to deal with it. Kudos to her! Unfortunately, she just learned that such an outlook can, in our nation, put you in the same class as common thieves and other criminals. I pray this doesn't discourage her from her strong work ethic and goals in life. She sounds like an amazing kid who has a lot to offer her community...

Because she is a child and it is now apparent that she has not walked the face of this earth long enough to know how to handle this. And in truth what she is doing is to much for most adults. These should not be her responsibilities. If she cannot comply with reasonable laws then a change needs to be made. She has broken the law and gone against the direct orders of a judge. And all this because she has more responsibility than she can bear.

How is she not able to handle it? She's an honor student. That's hard work.

So she doesn't fit the mold and broke it, and it works for her.

Instead of working with that, how does it help to give her a criminal record?

Not everything is black and white. Some logic should have come into play here. There are better ways to handle such situations IF one absolutely feels the government must intrude into someone's life that way.

How would you feel if the story was that she was in school and on welfare? I'm guessing there would be cries of how horrible to have someone leeching off the system and that she should get a job.

The girl is gonna get slammed no matter what she does by a society that can't break out of their black and white ways of seeing things. I just hope she doesn't get discouraged and give up.

BTW, don't you think it is odd that the government pounced on this amazing person and tossed her in jail, while a student can go to school every day, fail out, have a kid or three, go on welfare, and nobody tosses them in jail so long as they show up to school?

Don't you think it's odd that a home-schooled child's parents may face neglect charges if their home-schooled child fails and the judge may order the child removed and/or forced into public school, where they're allowed to fail and nobody is held criminally responsible so long as the child shows up for the head count?

It's so messed up to see people condoning the actions taken against this hard working honor student while the ones who truly tax our system and contribute nothing but embarrassment on a community are allowed to walk about with their heads held high while students like the one in this story are forced to hang their heads in shame and be housed with the criminal element?

How is that defensible?

Gina I am inclined to agree with you on this one as long as the story is what it sounds like. First the school should have worked with her on this instead of turning her in to the police. Second the judge should have had enough snap to see this was an exceptional case. Based on the information the school and the courts have failed this girl.
