Daniel J. Smith (27) of Sangar Tx; informed TSA in Syracuse, that he had driven from Tx to Syacuse. While preparing to fly back to Tx, Smith told TSA that he forgot he had his weapon with him. After being interviewed by police, TSA allowed him to board his flight.

Was that decision Good, Bad or indifferent?

If he had to check the weapon as required then I'd say it was a good decision.

I noticed the signs on my last flight while waiting through security. There was a reminder about firearms and instructions prior to screening.

It would be different if security had found the weapon.

The decision was a mistake in my opinion, as when traveling with a weapon, I ensure it is "unloaded." The fact it was "loaded" strongly suggests he may have been deliberately trying to foil security measures, putting his fellow travelers at risk. I would have put him on the no fly list for his "error."
