In another thread, SBCpreacher made this statement about people wanting to be free from the bondage of God....

"That sounds like the goldfish that wanted to be out of the bondage of the fish bowl. "Free at last" became "fool at last."

    This made me think...
My sermon this Sunday will be based on Acts 3:1-6. Where the Crippled man was begging, and Peter said, "Silver and Gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee..."

I am pointing out that People need the Lord! Not Silver or Gold, but Jesus... although they think they need something else...

Anyway, here is the opening illustration I just wrote based on SBCpreacher's statement...

    A Story…
    There once was a
    Goldfish named
    Fred….

Fred never was satisfied…He always wanted more.
You could feed him 3 times a day, and he wanted fed 4 times…

You could buy him new gravel, and he wanted marbles…

You could buy him a new house to put in his bowl, and he wanted the castle..

But the one thing Fred dreamed about…
    Was…
    Living outside that bowl!
Day by day he watched people through his little glass window…
They could walk from room to room,
They could talk to each other..
They could walk out the door..
And he could hear them talk about going to the mall.
    And there he was…
    Stuck in a bowl…
All he could do was swim in circles!
    Although
On Sundays he would pretend he was his favorite NASCAR Driver,
    Tony Stewart…

He loved the color of Tony’s Car!!
And he couldn’t wait until Sundays…
As the race was going on, he would pretend he was Tony…

He would go round and round until he hit the side of the bowl!!! Then he would try to blame someone else!!!
    But ANYWAY
One day he devised a plan…

He heard his owners talk about going to the mall…
    So he thought to himself….
”Today I am going to be a free fish!!!, no longer will I be shackled to this bowl full of water… If they can be free, I deserve to be free also… So when the leave…I am out of here!!”

    Sure enough…
    Within the hour
The owners left to go to the mall…

Fred thought to himself, “Here’s my chance!”

So he backed up as far as he could go into the lower corner of his bowl…
Then as fast as he could, he swam towards the top of the water…
    Then….
Up and out of the bowl he flew!!!
Fred felt the exhilarating feeling of flying for the first time in his life…

    He began singing,
“Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty, I’m free at last!!!”

    But then…
    Ka plunk!!!
    Fred hit the floor!!
There he lay gasping for air!

And what he thought was freedom…
    Was actually Death!!!
    He forgot about one thing….

    The Cat!!!

Yep, Bro., goldfish can't go against his nature. He's supposed to be a fish, swimming in the water, not something else flying in the air, and out of his natural element, where Felix is.

    Just kiddin'.

    I forgot to ask....

Why is it we humans always want what we can't have?
Or why does the grass always look greener on the other side?

We go around searching for happiness, but not knowing true happiness (Joy) is only found in Jesus...

And just like the Goldfish...Sometimes kids that grew up in church begin thinking that Biblical standards are hindering them... when in fact biblical standards are keeping them safe....

We all have been through this at some point... but why?

If you all can't tell, I have 1 teen son, and 2 more getting ready to become teens!!!

This reminds me of a movie I saw once sometime ago. About three kids who were caught with heroin in their backpacks, just a small amount, in Malaysia.
The authorities let two go, and detained only the one in whose backpack the heroin was found.
The other two, together with the sister of the detained, worked hard for the release of the third, and in the end, one admitted to sharing guilt with the other, and was himself put in detention.
Meanwhile, back here in the States, a journalist got a whiff of this developing "human interest" story and began hounding the sister who asked her, and made her swear that she won't break the story until her brother is free, because at her last visit to jail, they had a glimmer of hope.
Journalists being journalists, and all for the sake of "the public has the right to know", she broke her word, and printed the story, right on the very day that the Malaysian judge was to promulgate sentence.
The judge read the critical newspaper article. Critical of Malaysian justice: Hanging for a few grams of heroin ? Come on. Get real, and all that stuff.
    The article infuriated the judge.
During sentencing, he said: You Americans think we Malaysians are too tough. Too strict. But our kids are safe. Very few have the same habits you have, and our families are strong. Our culture demands that our society be safe for everyone, and our laws make sure those demands are met.

Words to that effect. Not verbatim.

    They hang the kid.

Joaquin Phoenix was that actor, if I recall correctly.

because of sin, because they (we ... ahem, me) we are rebellious.

Tim, it's just easier for some people to see this. It's easier for some people to rebell. I was the rebellious type. I know some of have a hard time seeing that, but it is because of God's work in my life. I fought God every step of the way. I don't do that anymore, but boy it took me years to see the benefits of not and that yes the standards that God put in place are for my benefit.

That's easy. It's because we believe that personal fulfillment is in the possessions we have or the power we have or the money that we have or the perfect relationships that we can control.

Many times, when we find out that our possessions, power, money, and relationsips can be sometimes crummy or disappointing, the our illogical brains come up with the idea that we would be happier if we had different possessions, more power, more money and different relationships.

We believe that our personal happiness comes from manipulating and controlling external events to suit our needs. That is soooooooo stupid.

We CANNOT control the external, not even the people that we are married to and are one flesh with.

So how can the external be our source of joy? It can't.

But we get caught up in the merry-go-round of life and believe that if what we own isn't making us happy then the problem lies in the "things" and the "relationships" and we constantly seek new and improved versions of what we have ignorantly thinking that this will make us happy.

You and MC hit it on the head!
This is reason People need the Lord. Only Jesus can give us that inward joy...

Sicee I've been quoted on the BB (in a good way this time!), is that worth an extra 100 posts on my post count?

    Another interesting fact about goldfish.

You can put a piece of plexiglas down the center of an acquarium. The goldfish will swim up to the plexiglas and hit their nose.

After a while, they stay away from the center of the acquarium.

The plexiglas can be removed, but the goldfish will still not try to cross to the other side.

    Just like some Christians...

Our bondage has been removed by Christ, but we are so used to the 'old ways' that we stay in a prison of our own making.

We are free, but we don't realize it - neither did the goldfish.
