We all know that there is no such thing as a 100% perfectly translated word for word version, b ut the point is that the formal transaltions are closer in meaning to what the originals were!

From Fee and Strauss :How To Choose A Translation For All Its Worth:

"Formal equivalent versions seek to modify Hebrew and Greek forms until the text is comprehensible. Mediating versions modify forms until the text is clear. Functional equivalent (or idiomatic) versions modify the form until the text is natural." (p.34)

"An accurate translation is one that reproduces the meaning of the text, regardless of whether it follows the form." (p.32)
