    I came within 10' of joining the Coast Guard. I visited all four services at the Federal Building in Newark, NJ and the Coast Guard recruiter was tenacious. I was going to be a radioman. I finally choose the Air Force because they guaranteed me E-3 out of basic training.

    The minimum time in grade required for promotion varies with need. I went from recruit to E5 in a little over one year, and it was not because I was something special.

    Promotion to E-2 and E-3 are basically automatic unless there has be1en a disciplinary situation - and E- 4 -(Sp4) at least in the Army somewhat automatic. In my sitation;

    EAD - 30 Jul
    E-2 --- 1 Nov*
    E-3 --- 1 Feb*
    E-4 --- 1 Jun*

    * Approximate dates

    I was on a 3 Year enlistment -
    was on the E-5 promotion list when I ETS
    Came back in 9 months later as an E-3 (30 Apr)
    Promoted back to E-4 about Sep

    Yes, my promotion to E3 was delays by a few months because when our 6 man room was inspected, the Company Comander found a "Uncle Sam wants you" card posted on the back of our entry door, with the words, "now Sam you know what you can do with that finger" written below. When the CO asks us in turn, they all said they had not seen the card, and did not know anything about it, but I said I thought it was funny. They all got their promotions on time. From then on I told Officers what they wanted to hear, rather than the truth. I never got in any more trouble. :)

    Well, IMHO - that action by the old man was a bit too much - maybe a day of KP would have been sufficent.
