This is from our local paper here, about something that happened upstate in Louisville.

Someone didnt want their dog anymore so they threw the dog off the Clark Memorial bridge 80 feet into the Ohio River.

A waitress at a restaurant on the river saved the dog and is keeping it. It turned into a real drama, as the patrons eating stopped to watch, and broke into applause when the dog was saved.

Here is part of it, with a link to the rest and a picture....

"LOUISVILLE — A day after plummeting 80 feet from the Clark Memorial Bridge into the Ohio River, “Sunny” the pit bull showed no signs of distress, apart from a swollen belly.

A white Chevy Malibu had stopped on the bridge in the southbound lanes, moments before Sunny’s plunge, said Kelsey Westbrook, the Joe’s Crab Shack server who took in the pooch and named her.

Sunny’s enlarged belly suggests she recently gave birth, Westbrook told The Courier-Journal.

“A person threw her over,” the University of Louisville senior said. “I guess somebody used her to breed and didn’t want to take care of her anymore.”

Workers at Joe’s Crab Shack were still talking a day later about the smacking sound Sunny made when she belly flopped onto the water during the afternoon of Sunday, July 26.

“It sounded like something hitting a wall,” restaurant server Bradley Cooper, 22, said of the noise that turned heads. “It was very, very loud.”

Westbrook and two other servers raced to the riverside to shout encouragement to the dog as it swam in circles a half mile way. At the sound of their voices, she said, the dog paddled toward them on the Kentucky side of the river. Louisville firefighters preparing for dive team training went out with their boat to get her some 20 feet from shore.

“I wanted to give her some hope, to let her know somebody was waiting for her,” Westbrook said. “I was afraid she would give up and drown.”

Diners erupted into applause as the dog, tail wagging, emerged from the skiff on a leash fashioned from nautical line, Cooper said.

“I was crying so hard, it was crazy,” Westbrook said. “I was ready to jump in the water and go after her.”

At riverside, Sunny scarfed down three hamburgers and lapped water from a crab bucket before going home to Westbrook’s Old Louisville apartment. There, the dog wolfed down five cups of Pedigree dog food.

“I laid with her and rubbed her belly for a while,” Westbrook said. “I am sure the fall for her was really painful.”

The person who threw her off the bridge should suffer likewise- with concrete tennis shoes on.

Ok, maybe not concrete tennis shoes- steel ones- to give him/her a fighting chance.

Good thing it was Joe's crab shack.

Had it been a Chinese restaurant...the cook might have gone in to rescue the dog.

I loathe dogs.

All they do is lick you in the face and pee on your carpet. And I HATE pitbulls. They are mean and they are ugly.

But you know what I hate worse....

....people who throw dogs off of bridges. May justice prevail.

And may that pitbull (I can't believe I'm saying this) have a happy, peaceful life with much dogfood, belly rubs, and chasing sticks ....er.... or whatever dogs like to do.

And may she pee wherever she wants and lick as many people in the face as she wants.

"yea and sharks aren't dangerous either.

Well, lets see...

"Known for their intelligence and loyalty American Pit Bull Terriers make excellent, loving and protective companions despite the unfair press they receive. A common question regarding the APBT is, "How is this breed different from the American Staffordshire Terrier?". In the eyes of the United Kennel Club, they are the same breed, but many disagree. Some AKC-registered American Staffordshire Terriers are dual-registered as American Pit Bull Terriers with the UKC; however, this draws criticism from many who point out that the bloodlines have been separate for too long for these to be considered the same breed. The AKC, on the other hand, does not allow a UKC-registered American Pit Bull Terrier to be registered as an American Staffordshire Terrier. To be dual-registered, the dog must first be an AKC-registered American Staffordshire Terrier and then it can be registered with the UKC as an APBT -- but not vice versa... Choose from a responsible breeder and make sure the puppy is properly socialized and handled. Solid training will produce a tranquil, good, obedient, companion dog.

His ancestors were brought to the United States in the mid - 1800's by Boston-Irish immigrants. Originally bred from a variety of bulldogs and terriers, American breeders increased his weight and gave him a more powerful head. A forbearer to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they were originally bred to be a fighting dog. Bull baiting was banned in England in 1835 and these dogs are no longer being bred to fight. There is some complication in registries of this breed. The AKC considers the American Staffordshire Terrier as separate and distinct from the American Pit Bull Terrier, yet the UKC will register both as American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs).

In America, the Pit Bull flourished. It was one of the most popular breeds, highly prized by a wide variety of people. The Pit Bull was used to represent the US in WW1 artwork; popular companies like RCA and the Buster Brown Shoe Company used the breed as their mascots. A Pit Bull named Petie starred in the popular children's television series, Our Gang; a Pit Bull mix named Stubby became a decorated WWI hero. Pit Bulls accompanied pioneer familes on their explorations. Laura Ingalls Wilder of the popular Little House books owned a working Pit Bulldog named Jack. Famous individuals like Theodore Roosevelt and Helen Keller owned the breed. It was during this time that the Pit Bull truly became America's sweetheart breed, admired, respected and loved."

They CAN be mean...if their owners make them that way.

Somebody is a cat person. Not a bad thing. I love cats and dogs. Right now I have one of each. Though I must confess, they don't like each other . I think my cat "Sheshe" would agree 100% with your post (if she could read).

All they do is lick you in the face...

I have trained my dog not to lick people on the face. Uly licks on the hand.

And I HATE pitbulls. They are mean and they are ugly.

Pit Bulls are not ugly. One of my friends has the most beautiful dog I have ever seen, and she is a Pit. She is white with blue eyes. Gorgeous! All of the Pits I have met over the years are as sweet as they can be. Sure there are "horror stories" but, when you really think about it, those are the minority. Any dog can be mean if mistreated or neglected. Most Pit Bulls never hurt anyone. The problem some people have with Pit Bulls is that they are smart and very strong. Not the kind of dog you want to neglect or mistreat.

But you know what I hate worse....

Yea, the story made me angry. Thankfully it has a very happy ending.

I really don't LOATHE dogs. I just don't like being around them. I don't like it when they jump on me! Even the little ones! LOL! (help!!)

I had a stranger to dump a dog in my yard out in the country once. It was a cute little long-haired white dog. My cat was the first to meet him in the yard and since he didn't care one way or another, I let the dog stay.

They got to be good friends. The dog even ate cat food. I almost started to even LIKE the dog. I named him Pup-Pup.

Then about a month later, he got hit by a car. :BangHead:

What I really loathe are people who are cruel to animals.

They have been cross bread for fighting. That is their whole purpose. And they are not to be trusted. At the same time we have, here in Florida, a crusade for the support of sharks making a very similar case. In both instances it can give people an unnecessary trust they should not have in either animal.
