I have posted differences between the TNIV and HCSB before. But in this thread I'd like to demonstrate that there is an affinity between the two versions.I know that expressing the idea that they are closer to one another runs against the HCSB's party-line.But as much as this may rankle I'll post my findings anyway.

At first I was going to do a three-way breakdown --renderings which are close, nearly the same, and exact. But I'll just list the references which run across the three categories.Even other verses in particular chapters which don't fit the criteria actually aren't that far removed from the same meaning.Different words may be used;but the same bottom line results. If I didn't know better I would think the HCSB was based on the TNIV.

So far I've just examined 6 New Testament books.I'll look at more N.T. chapters in the days ahead.

    Jude

    v.20

That's one verse out of 25.

    3 John

    verses 1,4,11 and 14

    That's 4 verses out of 14.

    2 John

    No verses.

    1 John

    In chapter 1 --one verse.That's 1 out of 10.(verse 4)
    In chapter 2 --four verses.That's 4 out of 29.(verses 7,12,21 and 29)
    In chapter 3 -- three verses.That's 3 out of 24.(verses 11,21 and 23)
    In chapter 4 -- four verses.That's 4 out of 21.(verses 8,14,18 and 19)
    In chapter 5 -- five verses.That's 5 out of 21.( verses 7,8,11,12 and 13)

    2 Peter

    In chapter 1 -- one verse.That's 1 out of 21.(verse 12)
    In chapter 2 -- two verses.That's 2 out of 22.(verses 1 and 9)
    In chapter 3 -- two verses.That's 2 out of 18.(verses 7 and 18)

    1 Peter

    In chapter 1 -- two verses.That's 2 out of 25.(verses 16 and 23)
    In chapter 2 -- four verses.That's 4 out of 25.(verses 3,10,21 and 25)
    In chapter 3 -- two verses.That's 2 out of 22.(verses 12 and 22)
    In chapter 4 -- two verses.That's 2 out of 19.(verses 14 and 17)
    In chapter 5 -- four verses.That's 4 out of 14.(verses 3,6,13 and 14)

Out of these six books, 1 Peter chapter 5 is the current winner.(3 John also had 4 verses out of 14;but all four had nearly the same wording. In 1 Peter 5 two of the verses had the exact wording -- the other two were nearly the same.)We'll see if any other chapter in the New Testament tops 1 Peter chapter in the days or weeks ahead.

I'd like to modify something I said in my initial post. : If I didn't know better,I would think that the HCSB's New Testament was based on the NIV.That's because the HCSB's N.T. was released in 1999 -- 3 years before the TNIV N.T.

    James

    In chapter 1 --one verse.That's 1 out of 27.(v.15)
    In chapter 2 --three verses.That's 3 out of 26.(vs.11,15 and 23)
    In chapter 3 --zero verses.That's 0 out of 18.
    In chapter 4 --two verses.That's 2 out of 17.(vs.10,12)
    In chapter 5 -- zero verses.That's 0 out of 20.

    Hebrews

In chapter 1 --two verses out of 14.(vs.2,5)
In chapter 2 --one verse out of 18.(v.1)
In chapter 3 --four verses out of 19.(vs.7,15,18,19)
In chapter 4 --three verses out of 16.(vs.4,5,8)
In chapter 5 --three verses out of 14.(vs.2,6,8)
In chapter 6 --one verse out of 20.(v.19)
In chapter 7 --two verses out of 28.(vs.2,25)
In chapter 8 --two verses out of 28.(vs.3,4)
In chapter 9 --one verse out of 28.(v.1)
In chapter 10 --three verses out of 39.(vs.16,21,31)
In chapter 11 --five verses out of 40.(vs. 10,21,24,33,38)
In chapter 12 --three verses out of 29.(20,24,29)
In chapter 13 --three verses out of 29.(vs.20,24,29)

Let's hear it for chapters 3 and 5 of Hebrews.Sorry chapter 11.Five is respectable;but not so impressive out of 40 verses.

    Philemon

Verses 1,2,3,4,11,17,19 and 25.That's eight out of 25.

That's a 32% rate of similar wording between the two translations.Pretty good.

    Titus

I found no similar wording between the two translations in the first two chapters.

There was just one lone verse in chapter 3.That passage is 3:7.That's one out of 15.

So the book of Titus comes up kinda' dry in this experiment.

    2 Timothy

Chapter 1--there are five verses out of 18.(vs.3,4,11,16,17)
Chapter 2--there are seven verses out of 26.(vs.11,12,13,17,19,22,26)
Chapter 3--there are three verses out of 17.(vs.7,12,13)
Chapter 4--there are eight verses out of 22.(vs.6,7,10,12,16,18,19,22)

Chapters 1,2 and 4 are worthy of recognition.

    1 Timothy

Chapter 1 --there are four verses out of 20.(vs.1,8,15,17)
Chapter 2 --there are four verses out of 15.(vs.1,3,4,13)
Chapter 3 --there are three verses out of 16.(vs.1,5,7)
Chapter 4 --there are four verses out of 16.(vs.4,9,10,11)
Chapter 5 --there are two verses out of 25.(vs.8,15)

Chapter 2 comes out as a winner.Chapter 4 is in second place.

    2 Thess.

Chapter 1 has three verses out of 10.(Vs.1,2,12)
Chapter 2 has four verses out of 17.(Vs.1,14,16,17)
Chapter 3 has three verses out of 18.(Vs.3,4,18)

Chapter 1 wins with chapter 2 in hot pursuit.

    1 Thess.

Chap.1 has two verses out of 10.(Vs.1,10)
Chap.2 has one verse out of 20.(V.1)
Chap.3 has three verses out of 13.(Vs.2,5,7)
Chap.4 has two verses out of 18.(Vs.14,18)
Chap.5 has eight verses out of 28.(Vs.2,7,10,11,16,21,24,28)

Chapter 5 wins hands down.Of course it was aided by the fact that most of the verses having kinship between the two versions are short.

Chapter 3 comes in second place.

Honorable mention goes to chapter 1.
