What are the top 5 college football programs right now? I am not asking what are the top 5 teams right now by the polls, etc. I am talking about the top 5 overall programs in the country.

No way A&M is in the top 5 programs in the country.

Pretty good list I think. The only other team I had considered up close to there might be Florida right now.

Top five right now? Today? Or this season? Last five years?
Hard to discount history, etc. I guess I need some clarification.

I'm sure most would be speaking of this in an hysterical - 'er I mean historical - manner.

I based my picks on who, if I was a top notch Division I prospect and discounting any team loyalties due to location, I would want to play for.

As of this day right now, what the top 5 programs? I agree with Ken's thinking, if you were a top recruit in the nation what schools are your unbiased top 5? (IOW, Tenn shouldn't be on your list :tongue3: )

I wasn't looking for a reason to put the Vols in a list. But, if you're talking future NFL stock, given that Tenn is tied for most players on an NFL roster right now, you'd have to consider them if you were a blue chip prospect. However, Tenn is not a top-five program right now.

Today, my top five programs are:

USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, Texas.

I base this on their current and most recent successes, coaching stability, etc. I think USC is a mile above the rest.

If you're asking me the best five teams this year, I'd have to have another list :)

The choice is simple for a recruit...if you can play for USC, play for USC.

I know, I was just teasing.

True. If you are coming from the perspective of the top 5 programs for professional players/talent then Tenn would be higher. However, having NFL talent on your roster doesn't equal being a top 5 program. A good example would be NC State last year. Didn't they have 3 first round draft picks off of their defense?

I would probabaly put Texas highter than ND and Florida at the moment, but overall a good list.

    I agree.

As would I. However, the top 5 teams this year does not equate with the top 5 programs at the current time.

Little question! USC is #1. I'd also rank Ohio State as #2, a bit above a pick- 'em list of some six or eight for the next three spots, although I, too think Texas might be a shade better than some of the others. Sorry, at the present time, I agree with SBC Pastor that there is no way that Texas A&M is in the top five and I would be hard pressed today to get them in the Top Ten.

I wouldn't have Texas A&M in the top 30 or 40. Who mentioned them?

I'd like to hear justification for A&M or Oklahoma being a top five. Sooners might make a list if this were done 3 years ago, but not today.

    OK

    USC
    Michigan
    UF
    Tenn
    OSU

These teams have great traditions, large stadiums, great facilities, and put tons of high impact players in the NFL.

Add-ons would be UGA, Texas, LSU, OU, Clemson, and FSU when they get their act together.

I guess I didn't add GA and FSU because of their down year this year. Clemson is an also-ran.

BTW, ND isn't on the list because they are too much a "tradition" and too little reality. They don't deserve to even sniff a BCS bowl game this year. They played two credible teams and were blown out by both of them.

Kinda looking forward to them struggling through a Clausen... probably cost Weis his job like the two brothers more than likely did a few UT coaches.

What do you count as their best victory of the year? Navy? GT? MSU?
