A senior Israeli rabbi with influence among almost 150,000 American Jews ruled Tuesday that they should vote for President George W. Bush in the upcoming US elections, his office said.

Rabbi Shalom Yosef Elyashiv, responding to queries from Americans residing in Israel, has decided that Bush is better for Israel than his competitor, John Kerry, said an assistant to the rabbi, Haim Cohen.

Elyashiv's opinions are respected by large ultra-Orthodox communities, especially in Israel and the US. Elyashiv has strong influence over about half of all haredi Jews of European origin.

"Apparently George Bush loves Israel and thus we need to vote for him," the rabbi said Tuesday, according to Cohen.

The rabbi does not usually rule on political matters, especially those that don't directly concern Israel. But Elyashiv decided that the US is a "kingdom of grace," or great friend to Israel, and thus the elections there can directly influence the Jewish state, Cohen said.

About 140,000 American Orthodox Jews will probably abide by Elyashiv's decision, said Sam Heilman, an expert on American Jews at Queens College in New York. But Elyashiv is just confirming the theories of many analysts who believe most haredi Jews in the US vote Republican, Heilman said in a telephone interview from his office.

"What's extraordinary is that the rabbi is addressing non-Israelis in a sense," Heilman said. "This confirms that the Orthodox community, by and large, is supporting Bush more than Kerry."

But those Orthodox Jews who are already dead set on Kerry will not necessarily change their minds, despite Elyashiv's ruling, Heilman said.

The rabbi's decision will influence the vote of at least 10,000 American Jews currently residing in Israel, at least 700 of whom are from the battleground state of Florida, he said.

Most American Jews typically vote Democrat and, in 2000, the community voted 4-to-1 for Al Gore. But Kerry faces a tougher battle among Jews this election since Bush has built a reputation as a strong backer of Israel.

Bush is being called the first Jewish President by some. Jews were very evident at the GOP convention in New York City. For the first time since 1928, the GOP is making gains in the Jewish community. It is because President Bush understands that the terror attacks against Israel by the Palestinian Arabs are the same sort of attack that America has experienced at the hands of Islamic Arabs. Also, people who like to work and be productive find that the GOP is harder working and more productive than the Dems, who look to government to help their friends.

Chris Heinz, Teresa’s son: “One of the things I’ve noticed is the Israel lobby - the treatment of Israel as the 51st state, sort of a swing state.”

Mr. Heinz also referred to Republicans as “enemies” and called our president a “cokehead.

Sounds a lot like the same kind of rhetoric I have seen from the Constitution Party.

I guess that one would have to say that the Heinz Family are a bunch of French Fries.

More seriously, the Democrat Party will receive most of the Jewish votes, but it is Democrats who make the most anti-Semetic remarks nowadays.

Actually, I don't think you are correct about that. Most of the Jews I know are voting for Bush and there is a big movement among American Jews living in Israel to vote for Bush this year. The DEMS are losing their base the more looney they become.

Polls indicate that Jews will vote 3-1 in Kerry's favor.

I would be interested in seeing those polls. All I saw was one guy's opinion editorial where he quotes "some polls"?

What polls is he looking at?

Since FDR, Jews have been part of the Democrat coalition. It is orthodox Jews who are moving away from the Democrat Party and voting GOP. Also, people such as former Mayor of New York City Koch is voting for Bush. And others such as talk-show host and author Michael Medved have joined the GOP.

According to a poll commissioned by the American Jewish Committee: If the election were held today, 69 percent of Jewish voters would support Kerry, 24 percent would back Bush and 3 percent would give their votes to Ralph Nader, the survey found.

Likely U.S. Jewish voters favor Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) over Bush by 75 percent to 22 percent in the coming presidential election, according to a poll published Monday by the National Jewish Democratic Council.

Preferences between George Bush, shown in red, and John Kerry among American Jews, according to polling conducted July 26-28 for the National Jewish Democratic Council.

While it is true that more Jews will probably still vote for Kerry, it is interesting to note how much that support for Democrats has dropped in the last four years. The Democrats are losing their base and it is because they have abandoned their base and begun embracing the fringe looney left which are generally very anti-semitic.

In the past four years, the Democrats have lost 10% of the Jewish vote. I have also heard that more blacks will be voting for Bush this year than they have in the past. I have also heard that more women are leaving the DEMS for Bush. The DEMS have gone off the edge in the middle of a war and are losing their base because of it.

Now this is something I really do not understand. By definition, jews do not believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah they are still waiting for. How can they want to vote for a man who says he is a Christian (therefore someone who believes the opposite from them)??

This is a mystery to me. All jews not converted to Christianity will be unsaved. How is the jewish faith compatible with the christian faith?

This is not about religion. It is about politics. Israel is fighting their own war against terror. Bush has been very supportive of Israel. Therefore, they are political allies. It really has nothing to do with their belief or non-belief in Jesus.

Joseph is correct that it is about politics, not religion, Corrine.

Jews can vote for an Evangelical Christian because an Evangelical Protestant loves Jews and loves Israel for the sake of Jesus Christ, the King of The Jews Who Died and Rose For All People including gentiles.
