I see where one of the SBC bigwigs is in the paper saying (among other things) that we must believe and teach that "Christianity is the true religion" (presumably as opposed to Islam et al.). Looking in my Bible, the only definition of "pure [close as the Bible gets to 'true'] religion" that I see (it's in James) is "1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion [is] vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world." This says nothing explicit about belief systems, christologies, or the name of God. A Muslim could do it as well as a Christian; or a Buddhist; or an atheist.

God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

1 Tim 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Thanks ---------Bart

One cannot share the truth with others if he himself, does not have it...

Could do WHAT? </font>
Practice pure religion. Of course they couldn't practice it perfectly, the Christian included, because all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory, but I think they might do it as well as the Christian.

Of course, it wouldn't get them into heaven, but that's not the point; the point is, it's the right thing to do, and non-Christians are not ipso facto bereft of the moral sense to see that.

Christianity as institutionalized by churches and denominations is nothing more than an imperfect organized religion. It is no better than any other organized religion.

True Christianity, however, is not about what church/denomination we belong to. True Christianity is having a relationship with God through Jesus. You can't get that via the SBC,IFB, or any other acronym. You get that only from God Himself.

Now your slam against the SBC aside I believe that Jesus himself said that He is the way the truth and the life. I agree with Him and whatever "bigwig" you are quoting that we must believe and teach that Christianity is the true religion. My question for you is do you not agree with this statement? Is your post and thread intended to convey the message that islam is equal to Christianity or was it intended solely to antagonize other posters who are members of the SBC? IMO it is most likely the "among other things) that are angering most liberals [IMG]

Exactly. Jesus didn't say THIS is the way, Jesus said HE is the way.

Buddhism is not the way,
Hinduism is not the way,
Islam is not the way,
Zoroasterianism is not the way,
Christianity is not the way.

Only Jesus is the way.

</font>
John I have dissagreed with you on many things but I believe this is the most rediculous yet. The disciples were first called Christian at Antioch, do you not realize that Christianity means to follow Christ. I will ask you a similar question to the one I asked harue, are you equating all the false religions you listed with Christianity?

John can answer for himself, but I think you're misunderstanding him. I took him to mean that Christianity, the religion, is not the way - i.e. we don't come to God by following "religion", by playing church, even if that church is a Christian church. Someone can know all the Christian doctrine, teach Sunday School, tithe, sing in the choir, thump his Bible, etc., and that's not going to save him. *Jesus* is the way, not a religion built around him. Christ's followers constitute Christianity, and Christianity can *point* to the way, but Christianity itself is not the way. John's statements weren't ridiculous at all. [IMG]

The way BrianT puts it makes a lot of sense. Those Churches that are clearly cults can call themselves, "Christian", but they are not. Then you have Churches that have departed from THE faith. It is that relationship with the Lord Jesus that saves.

I stand by my post's, and I hate it when we nit pick something to death. If the thread is about false churches then I take great offense because Haruo based it upon the SBC. I don't believe it concerned false christian churches but rather the statement that christianity is the only true religion. Does anyone dissagree that christianity is the only true religion?

If christianity isn't the one true religion, then Jesus is nothing, muslims, buddists, and athiests doen't have Jesus, all their going to do is go to hell.
and this is about the silliest thing I've heard come from a christian.

Christianity is the true religion, but that doesn't make it "the way". We are not saved by religion, even if it is "true".

I think we are splitting hairs. I often misspeak. So to say Christianity is the way may have been a mispeak. ummm where is the context. I hate getting one sentance from a conversation or 1 verse from a scripture, because taken out of context many things can be twisted way to easily. Had it happen and almost lost my job until the whole tape was played .

I believe the idea is drawn from Our Lord's declaration in John:
These words are the cornerstone of the principle of Christian exclusivity.

It seems the originator of this thread is being a bit hyper-critical.When most people hear that "Christianity is the only true religion," they understand the meaning of the statement to be that true Christianity is the religious faith that bears the true message that Jesus is the Only Way to the Father.Your opening statement is ridiculous and an insult to our intellegence.

(I'm not usually this blunt. Sorry about that. )

TRUE Christianity, that once delivered onto the saints faith is, indeed the only TRUE religion. As for the SBC, I still have my membership at a SBC and was baptized by a SBC pastor. I have no doubt that the SBC, officially, is faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ and many will be in heaven because of their work. A relationship with the SBC is not what saves, only a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ is what saves. I would hope that everyone would agree to that. Also, if the original poster here is saying you can, "Climb up another way," that is heresy. I hope that this clarifies my position.
