A school down in South Carolina used Martin King Day (scheduled day off) as a make up day due to excessive snow days.

State Representative John R. King was not OK with the decision. King plans to introduce a bill next week that would require the entire state to close schools on the King holiday.

These same people are the ones that decried the excessive number of Federal Holidays forcing the combining of Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays...

Now as important as MLK is for a very small part of our populace, he didn't hold a candle to either Washington or Lincoln...

If black people want to stay home from school to honor Martin Luther King, then that's their right. It's kind of ironic that they would choose to stay out of school to honor a guy who emphasized the importance of black people getting an education, but then, black people do a lot of things that don't make sense.

But the rest of us shouldn't be forced to celebrate their holidays or their history month.

I think that's the most racist comment I've ever seen here on BB. Um, ALL people do things that don't make sense to others. Black, white, protestant, Catholic, liberal, conservative, Democrat or Republican.

And MLK day is not just for black people, it's for ALL of us to remember and learn from the past.

Honestly? There are far better people to learn from.

As a teacher, I know many teachers who used to use MLK day as an entire day to teach the history of the man, and of his importance and influence in society. But, now that it has become a day off school, the day has lost it's impact on the students, and the man is not given an entire day in the curriculum as he was before. They basically ended up causing the students to be educated less about that part of history, by making it a school holiday, and would have done better to leave it alone.

I've mulled this one over for a bit and, sorry to say, it is a racist statement. I don't know if you meant it that way or not and I understand the cold print on the cool computer screen does not carry inflection at all ... and of course body language is not shown.

Should others be forces to celebrate our, whatever they are, holidays? I have no idea what "our holidays" might mean. You statement seems rather illogical to me in that it is not "their" holiday. It is a general holiday for a historic American. What you think of that person, favorable or unfavorable is another topic.

Yes, I singled out black people. And since you're obviously having a hard time keeping up with the topic of this thread, the reason I singled out black people is because the OP is referring to one specific person, who is black and who is most closely associated with one specific group, which is the black community.

The overwhelming majority's allegiance to the political party that has done more to destroy their families than any other entity does come to mind when I read this. I do see the irony.

There is no major difference between black trash popular culture and white trash popular culture. What is trash culture? Take a quick look at "Judge Judy" or the other 'judge' TV programs. I wouldn't want any of them as neighbors and that includes the judges.
