Representative Michael Grimm has said he will resign from Congress, after pleading guilty to a tax fraud charge.

In a statement, Grimm said he could not "be 100% effective in the next Congress" and will quit next week. He is scheduled to be sentenced in June.

The New York Republican had won re-election in November despite being charged for underreporting $1m (£644,000) in wages and receipts

He pleaded guilty last week, saying he would fight to keep his seat.

"As long as I'm able to serve, I'm going to serve," Grimm had told reporters.

But a change of heart came and Grimm spoke to House Speaker John Boehner before making his latest statement.

Mr Boehner has not publicly called for his resignation, but has said his party would not tolerate wrongdoing…..

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the House majority whip, acknowledged Monday that he spoke at a gathering hosted by white-supremacist leaders while serving as a state representative in 2002, thrusting a racial controversy into House Republican ranks days before the party assumes control of both congressional chambers.;;;;

Great timing.

In typical Republican fashion, Grimm resigned. As he should. Democrats don't.

As for Scalisi, it will be on the front page and a lead news story for weeks, although it amounts to nothing. I'll wager No one will be able to demonstrate one iota of racist leanings by Scalisl, but he will be branded a racist.

Meanwhile the racist triumvirate of Obama , Holder , and Sharpton wil continue to try to rip the country apart.

If there are no further revelations, I bet it's off the news outlets by Friday, if not sooner.

Scalise, 49, who ascended to the House GOP’s third-ranking post this year, confirmed through an adviser that he once appeared at a convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, or EURO. But the adviser said the congressman didn’t know at the time about the group’s affiliation with racists and neo-Nazi activists.

You can't be a politician in Louisiana and not know with what groups David Duke is affiliated.

Frankly I was prepared to give him a pass because it was nearly 13 years ago. But now David Duke has spoken.

But now the GOP has made David Duke mad.

David Duke to Politicians: If You Throw Scalise Under the Bus, I’ll Tell Everyone That We’ve Met
by Tina Nguyen | 1:11 pm, December 30th, 2014

David Duke, prominent neo-Nazi and founder of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, has a message to lawmakers scrambling to condemn Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) for speaking to his white supremacist group: throw my friend under the bus, and I’ll tell the world we hung out.

After Duke confirmed yesterday that he knew Scalise and thought he was a “fine family man,” Duke, famous in Louisiana politics for almost getting elected to high office despite being open about his history of white supremacy, told Fusion that Scalise wasn’t his only buddy (who he met “several times”). In fact, he knows lots of people in the Louisiana congressional delegation, people who really don’t want to be publicly associated with him.

Overall, Duke was rather flabbergasted by the new focus on Scalise. He said he has hosted both Democratic and Republican legislators at everything from conferences to his children’s birthday parties. He said he has met with Democratic legislators at least 50 times in his political life.

And he delivered a warning to both Republicans and Democrats: Treat Scalise fairly, and don’t try to make political hay out of the situation. Or he said he would be inclined to release a list of names of all the politicians — both Republicans and Democrats — with whom he has ties.

“If Scalise is going to be crucified — if Republicans want to throw Steve Scalise to the woods, then a lot of them better be looking over their shoulders,” Duke said.

But I will practically guarantee that there will be Republicans saying "he's not a racist."

That didn't take long....except the defender is a Dem.

The embattled congressman also was backed by Rep. Cedric Richmond, currently the only Democrat representing Louisiana.

"I don't think Steve Scalise has a racist bone in his body," Richmond, who is black, told the Times-Picayune. "Steve and I have worked on issues that benefit poor people, black people, white people, Jewish people. I know his character."

I'm not touching that bet. But I will practically guarantee that there will be Republicans saying "he's not a racist."

Just as they should. A pre-emptive strike is called for, I believe. We know beyond the shadow of a doubt what's coming from the left.

He probably would have been okay if he or his rep hadn't said they didn't know. Now David Duke has said they met several times.

David Duke: I've Met With Steve Scalise Several Times, So What?

Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke said in an interview with Fusion on Monday that not only did House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) speak at a 2002 meeting of a group he led, but that the two of them also met on several occasions.

Duke's comments came as Scalise is dealing with the fallout of revelations that he spoke to the white nationalist group and that, in 1999, he reportedly said he agreed with Duke on "conservative" issues but questioned the ex-KKK leader's electability to Congress.

"Why is Scalise being singled out? I don't know," Duke told Fusion about the 2002 meeting. "He was just going there, obviously, to tell voters about some of his initiatives on some tax matters. That’s what it's all about. And I think it's insane, this whole process."

Duke's comments came with a warning to Republicans who might be quick to distance themselves from Scalise.

"If Scalise is going to be crucified — if Republicans want to throw Steve Scalise to the woods, then a lot of them better be looking over their shoulders," Duke told Fusion. He added that he wasn't afraid to release a list of names of politicians he has connections to.

Duke also disputed accusations that he was a "racist" or "white supremacist," saying the political scorn being directed at him was "all bullshit."

Both Scalise and Duke served in Louisiana's House of Representatives. Duke held office from 1989-1992, with multiple unsuccessful bids in the late 90s, and Scalise served from 1996-2008.

In the interview with Fusion, Duke maintained that the two didn't really have a professional, business or political relationship.
