U.S. Illegal Immigration Plunges on Trump Crackdown

Washington (AFP) – Illegal immigration across the US-Mexico border has plunged in the past two months as President Donald Trump’s crackdown takes hold, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said Wednesday.
Apprehensions of people trying to sneak into the United States, seen as an indicator of the total flow of undocumented immigrants, dropped to 16,600 in March, down 30 percent from February and 64 percent from a year ago.

Kelly told the Senate Committee on Homeland Security that there was even a sharper fall in the number of families and unaccompanied children crossing the border.

“We’ve seen an absolutely amazing drop in the number of migrants coming out of Central America,” he said.

“In particular we have seen a dramatic reduction in the number of familie

Oh? What "crackdown" has Trump instituted that resulted in the decrease in illegal immigrants?

Furthermore, the number of illegals entering the country is unknown. What is known is the number of people apprehended, and those numbers are down. This implies a reduction in the total number attempting to cross the border, but it isn't proof.

I don't know. We've been told there hasn't been one. So these numbers have to be false, right?

I never said the numbers were false. The numbers reflect the number of people apprehended, not the number of people crossing the border. There is a difference. The number of illegals getting through is unknown. Breitbart doesn't care about the difference so they trumpet, "ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION PLUNGES ON TRUMP CRACKDOWN". This is fake news.

What is the crackdown that Trump instituted?

Of course, you did.

"Furthermore, the number of illegals entering the country is unknown."

You're quibbling.

Sorry, but no, I'm not quibbling. The article says:

Actual illegal immigration numbers of people going across the US-Mexico border is unknown. What is known is the number of people being apprehended is down. That might mean that the number of people attempting crossing is down, or it could mean that people are getting better at evading capture.

I ask again, what is the crackdown that Trump is using?

Of course you are. You state "Furthermore, the number of illegals entering the country is unknown."

Then you state "I never said the numbers were false."

And you don't call that quibbling. Amazing!

Which do you think it is?

I don't know why I have to explain this to you.

The numbers in the article are the number of people that were apprehended. Those numbers are not false (so far as I know), and were 16,600 in March.

The number of illegal immigrants entering the country is unknown. It's irresponsible to say that illegal immigration is down because the number of apprehended people are down.

Now, what was that crackdown that Trump instituted? (Third time I've asked.)

And I answered it long ago. Your continued badgering for answers to questions that have already been answered is mimmicking ctb.

I have no idea.

You're quibbling again. and your possible causes leaves out a third, and possibly even a fouth one.

But that's a product of your personal animosity toward Trump and everything he does, so no explanation is necessary.

Ah, no one needs to "supply facts". Make a statement on what you believe to be correct. Maybe an article or opinion of someone else. But "x" can say this is what I believe. "Y" can disagree.

But badgering to satisfy someone's self-imposed standard of "fact" is not helpful.

This isn't logic class. :)

OK, I'll play. Trump didn't have any sort of crackdown. He has done nothing since he was inaugurated on Illegal immigration except promise to hire more Customs agents. So the headline is false, there was no "crackdown".

I think his RHETORIC alone has changed the whole scene on the border. I have a friend in southern AZ who says he knows of more activity going south (back to Mexico) compared to any other time in his life. A president who takes a stand AGAINST the criminals is refreshing to them after 8 years of whining and inaction.

But time will tell if the bombast alone will reduce such criminal action; words at least are better than not even admitting a problem.

Look at the chart I posted from the Customs Service. If you equate declining removals with declining attempts to cross the border they've been trending downward for years. This happened in what you describe as an era of "whining and inaction." I will give Trump some credit that his tough talk is having an effect, but this is not a "crackdown".

It's not JUST talk. The "catch and release" program has ended. That alone will help curb illegal entry. ICE is also being more aggressive in "sanctuary" areas at chasing down the convicted felons. That activity also has a chilling effect on illegal entry...on everyone but the felons. They'll come back, no matter what. They like our system of justice and prison here is like a country club compared to Mexican prisons.

But the rhetoric has had an effect and, using the standard that has always been used, border crossings are down a bunch.
