“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation."

-- Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf, p. 403 Publ. Houghton Mifflin, 1943)

Yep. It's an age old trick and is a very dirty one at that. Our local school district keeps asking for money "for the children"....all the while the administrator makes well over $100k a year and they are putting smart boards in some classrooms. This is done while they don't have enough text books. Kids are on the honor roll who can't read.

When they don't get what they want they cut foreign language classes, programs for low income families, and fire people. They also have a "rainy day fund" of several million dollars.

There is no common sense. There is no desire to properly manage a budget. The kids don't really matter.

Every time kids are used in this way I vote no.

It is certainly contradictory to use children in this way but object to ultrasounds before an abortion.

Yep, here in Minnesota there was a 103% increase in education funding in the decade of 1998 - 2008 and yet they still ask for more money, "for the children"

I agree and every time I see Adolph Hitler invoked I usually pay scant attention.

You were actually doing well until you hit the Hitler part. Just because you find the example over used does not make the argument any less valid.

The difference? The "for the children" tripe is just an emotional plea. The Hitler comparison is just using historical examples to prove a point and provide a warning. Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I understand that you liberals don't see it as being doomed but people who love freedom and personal responsibility see it for what it is.

    No class at all.

There he stands knowing those children he's using to advance his anti gun agenda will eventually go back to a school that was left defenseless against armed attackers by the anti gun agenda.

Only a heartless sociopath could do something like this.

    Agreed.

I have often said he has no class. I believe this is a new low, even for him.

Especially in light of the armed guards where his own children go to school.

Brother, my school has a smartboard in every class. With textbooks costing $75+ each, it's a wonderful way to teach, the children love it, and each child doesn't need a textbook.

It's a great money saver. I couldn't teach without it.

That said, of course there is wasteful spending everywhere.

I understand it but I use a different word to describe it. Hypocrisy.

Scarlett you are an intelligent and capable adult. You don't need a smart board to teach those kids.

What about homework? What about study time at home?

I may be old fashioned and out of step with the times. That said, I well remember how much time was needed with my nose in a book, outside of the classroom, to learn what was presented in the classroom.

    Really?

How did teachers manage to get along without it for centuries?

I think You're a better teacher than you give yourself credit for and could teach with only 1 real book and a blackboard if you had to.

Obama is a wannabe dictator and uses many tactics right out of the playbook of all dictators. Hitler is only one...and one of the most successful.

Your attention wanders because you can't face the truth.

I agree. I am a teacher and though Scarlett and I may disagree, there is no doubt in my mind she could teach in the old Irish hedge schools with no materials.
