Not exactly. The only way to effectively deal with the "enormity of death" is to accept the fact that we are all going to die.

Some people engage in gallows humor. I have a friend who is a TSA screener at Reagan Airport and her most common response to the question of how her day at work was, is "Well, didnt get blown up today" and laughs.

I thought both jokes were funny and I am in the military with the constant threat of coming home "in a flag draped coffin".

I think that you fear death more than most Patrick and that is where this whiplash reaction comes from to this joke. Lighten up, the path to Heaven is more enjoyable that way.

 

The only way?

Even acceptance that we all are going to die (except me, of course) doesn't necessarily help everyone to deal with the death of those near and dear. Humor does help ease the dealing - maybe not for you, but it most certainly does for me.

I don't fear my own death so much as that of my husband.

Yeah. The only way. There is no getting out of this life alive. You can joke about it till your last breath, however, it IS still your last breath.
