Was a $500 fine justified?

I´m 66 1/2 in a few days and this is such a shining example of truth! The US, throughout my life has been moving, incrementally, towards Karl Marx´s perfect government that always stops short at Socialism because perfect Communism is a pipe dream that refuses to admit the imperfection and greed of mankind. To fine these folks for teaching their children the very basis for what made this nation great is sheer stupid arrogance!
I thought the Communist State (Ohio) was the only one who did that!
They told me they were too afraid to respond to a report of a man with a gun because "that area is so bad" but the next morning they had two squad cars out there busting two kids for having a lemonade stand. Didn't know the kids, but it ticked me off and I complained and they justified it by saying they were operating a food stand without a license. BLAH
Shoulda told 'em the kids had guns, maybe they'd have run away and left them alone!

They didn't get a permit to operate their stand.
Apparently the permit requirement wasn't a secret seeing other folks got their permits. I know that illegal lemonade stands are benign compared to the many heinous crimes committed but the rules are there for a reason. You don't have to agree with the county's permit requirements you just have to abide by their rules - or work to change it.
If you keep traveling south on my street you will find yourself rolling through six miles of winding, twisting road. It takes a while to negotiate the gorge but you could probably cut the time by a third if you were free to ignore the double solid yellow line down the middle of the road. No big deal, is it? After all it's just a line painted on the road.
Agreed, but the questions was "Is $500 excessive" (for the first offense)

The parents violated the law and need to take responsibility. Pay unto Caesar what is Caesar's. If they had been good parents they would have obeyed the law first and taught their children to be law abiding citizens. Instead they are teaching them to be anarchists. If the law needs to be changed then they need to follow the prescribed manner is getting it changed, but as long as the law is on the books they need to obey it. The fine was justified.
The fine amount isn't some arbitrary figure. It is part of the law. $500 is a lot of money but if the law states the fine to be $500 then $500 it will be!
Salty, I'm just now reading this and I thought to myself that the fine should be based on what profits they were making. And sure enough, the article stated that they were making hundreds of dollars at the site they were at.
So, no - I don't think that the fine was excessive. It would have been grossly excessive had they only made $25.
Also, there is an update. I don't know if anyone saw it.
It's not that this was a "horrible crime", but it was a violation of the law.
Also, this was one of many profit-making home businesses that were set up because of the U.S. Open. The article also said that people were selling parking places in their front lawns, too.
I'm sure that in a situation like this, the authorities have to be nit-picky about what people sell to tourists and how the locals try to make money off the U.S. Open. It could get out of hand.
I don't believe - and this is just my opinion - that the parents were ignorant of the fact that a permit was required.
And the mother over-reacted a wee bit. She said "The message to kids is: there's no American dream."
If she is going to allow her children to believe that or if she is the one teaching them that - then SHE is the one squashing the "American dream". And if she studied her history enough, she would know that the "American dream" for the overwhelming majority of people cost them something - for some, a great deal.
The American dream is real, but it isn't free. That's a lie we've told ourselves to justify our extravagence.

Post 8 "The fine was justified" This stuff of first offense is why so many today think they can violate the law. It comes from poor parenting where the parent says to the child "I am going to count three and you better." What ever happened to just telling someone once? Like I said in post 8 the fine was justified. It is not like it is a hidden thing. They knew they needed a permit, but thought they would get away without one. It is like people who know the speed limit is 60 and they drive 62 or 65 hoping the police will turn their heads and most do. The law is the law, break it and pay the fine.
So its okay to speed if it is a toll road? :applause: :smilewinkgrin:
