West Virginia coal mine had history of safety violations

The East Coast has beautiful country - and cities - but it is to hot in the summer and to cold in the winter. In the Seattle area it hardly ever goes over 80 or below 30. In a couple of hours I can drive to the Pacific Ocean, the mountains, or high desert climate. And no state income tax! Sales tax under 10% and property tax usually runs 1% to 1.5% of assessed value.

Nope, it's just a very apt name for liberals (flip flopping liberals in some cases) who worry so much that the government isn't doing enough to protect them that they have bladder control issues.

 

This morning they are reporting smoke in the mine. Smoke means fire. Not good.

 

I hope the vein of coal has not caught on fire. Such underground fires can burn for years.

The situation is grim. May God protect the miner's families and all those involved in the finding of the lost miners. At this point, I believe there is no way the trapped miners are still alive.

 

So, in your world, worry causes bladder control issues? You just love to get as close to cussing liberals here as the rules will apply. Again, it's easy to insult when you are not face to face with your foe.

If mines are safer than 100 years ago . . . which came first? The UMW or government safety regulations?

 

Billwald, have you ever even been to WV and gone into a coal mine? Or are you basing your opinions on what the liberal news media reports? Do you even have any clue about mining practices that are currently used?

It has been my experience that people who want to degrade our miners and mining companies have an agenda that has nothing to do with caring about our miners, safety practices or unions.

 

Maybe someone who knows more about this can answer this. Why can't they have a large supply of oxygen tanks stationed throughout the mine? Every time one of these accidents happens it always seems like there are a handful of men that die due to lack of oxygen. It almost seems to obvious so there must be a reason why not, but stations with oxygen tanks, water and maybe some type of communication device would go a long way in increasing the chances some would survive.

 

I believe it's the UMW that did much to insure miner safety, as has most unions.

You need to differentiate between the miners and the companies. With respect to employee safety the problems of coal miners is no different than safety issues in every other industry. You think sewing shirts is a "safe" occupation? My Father saw the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire.

Yes, I agree. But what some folks don't seem to understand is that "coal companies" are not always greedy thugs looking to make a profit while killing off their employees. That would be like killing the goose that lays the golden egg. Dead or hurt employees equals a bad company reputation, lawsuits, and lack of people willing to work the mines.

Mining companies have all kinds of rules already in place. It's up to them to make sure those rules are followed. Every time a disaster happens, people start screaming for MORE government regulations, when really I think the rules already in place just need to be enforced.

This is why I say people who degrade the mining companies and the miners have an agenda: they want more government control. It's not about safety. If it was, they'd do more to enforce the rules already on the books.

 

Mark My word... Obama is now calling for a full scale congressional investigation.. (As if those idiots on Capital hill can get ANYthing right)...

Obama and the Demoncrats will turn this tragedy into a political circus to advance their already too intrusive agenda of getting rid of coal.

OK. There seems to be a psychological/social difference when the company store is owned by one of your neighbors. People seem to tolerate more . . . control when it is exercised by their own kind of people. For example, Americans rant against federal taxation over which they have almost zero control but ignore local excesses over which they have total control because mayor Joe is a 'good old boy.'
