...seems to begin with a Jewish question.

“When you have an ideology that pretends to know exactly who the oppressors are and who are the oppressed, and you have an ideology that conflates success with oppression … then Jews who do, on average, better than the mean, are going to be viewed as oppressors.”

For decades, David Bernstein has served in senior roles at major Jewish organizations. But when he saw the effect that woke ideology was having on these institutions, he decided to tackle the problem head-on and start a new nonprofit demanding a return to classical liberalism.

“I want there to be conservatives. As the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt says … a bird needs a left wing and a right wing in order to fly,” says Bernstein.

We dive into his book, “Woke Antisemitism: How a Progressive Ideology Harms Jews,” and discuss Kanye West, Elon Musk, and the Soviet-Jewish refusenik Natan Sharansky.

“When he hears woke ideology in America and the West, it sounds the same to him as the communist ideology that he grew up with, except that they’ve replaced class with race,” says Bernstein.

What he’s saying has much merit. But, however reluctant he may have been to pig wrestle in the past, he should now address the issue a bit more honestly by stressing that many of these ideologies have their roots in Jewish secular thought.

Jews are not a monolithic group and never have been. Often they have been their own worst enemy by opposing other Jews, and that is what we are seeing in this woke ideology, which he notes looks a lot like the ideologies that dragged Imperial Russia into Soviet communism.

And that's my point. But there's more. Marx, in his "Jewish Question," identifies the Judeo-Christian tradition as the root of the idea of individual rights. It evolved from an anti-semitic argument to an argument of class distinction. And now it's manifest again as anti-semitism.

The “there’s more” is a bit hard to follow. Perhaps because Marx’s roots were both secular Jew and Lutheran. But Marx was an atheistic Jew.

What I mean by "there's more," is that Communism didn't start as an argument about the injustice of class, as stated in the interview. It starts further back as antisemitism, according to some analysts, then morphed into class distinction. I'm pointing out that it is manifesting itself as antisemitism again.

But that's just on the surface. Marx was countering the claims of the Jewish petitions for their liberation in Germany, and was identifying their claims as the inevitable fruit of their religious tradition. He argued that first, religion was just a necessary notion in the Evolutionary development of mankind, and that the idea of individual rights was destructive to society, creating as it does, the bourgeoisie, or middle class.
