Is it just me, or does holding hands with non family members put me on edge? I certainly don't get the warm fluffy fondness feeling, just a feeling of barely tolerable resignation. Can't wait for it to be over with.

    love,

Obviously not! and I think enough concern from a variety of angles has been expressed that I'd at least hope that those all gung-ho about it would consider the feelings of those of us who don't wanna do it.

And it's not because we don't love our brothers and sisters in Christ!

I'm not big on group hand holding --- being Presbyterian and all. However, I did experience something unique last summer.

I was at an inner city church that has a very mixed congregation -- racially, ethnically and economically. As you can imagine, it can be very difficult to build community with such diversity. This is one thing they do --- after each Sunday am service, all congregants form a large circle around the sanctuary and communion is served by the elders. Afterwards, everyone - young, old, rich, poor, white, brown, and black - everyone, joins hands and sings "Amazing Grace."

Other than that, I usually just hold hands with my spouse.

madre plays the piano at church. Not a good time for holding hands. If she held my hands when I was preaching I'd probably stutter, lose my place and the couldn't "turn over in my Bible" as the saying goes.

I could think of 100 good reason why you would hold someone's hand during church. Standing in a circle singing Kumbaya is not one of them.

Do we refuse to 'shake hands' with someone who extends his paw? I don't think I have refused that at church before. I have with salespersons or strangers who look like they're up to something.

From the germ phobia in this thread, it sounds like Purell has a large untapped market of putting hand sanitizer in church pews. ;)

I've heard Purell only kills bacteria, not viruses. It's no substitute for good ol' soap and water.

I don't care much to do it now, unless I am standing next to a guy I am interested in.

I'm not worried about germs or runaway lust, but hand-holding does make me uncomfortable, if only because it seems forced. Those who want to hold hands can do so, but I'd prefer to opt out.

i'm willing to do it, but it's not my "cup of tea", and generally it is not something i will ask for from the pulpit since i'm not very comfortable with it. I guess it's part of me being an introvert.

Joining hands, especially during prayer is a sign of unity. I also beliveve that it also is a conduit through which the Holy Spirit can flow and re-vitalize us as Christians and in igniting a spark in those who do not know Him.

Every Sunday morning, during our Sunday School devotional, and before going to our classes we have a circle of prayer. I for one think it is one of the best things that we as a church do.
