What is your favorite Study Bible and why?

I am far from KJV only, but I must confess, my first choice is my 1945 Cambridge King James Version. My 2nd read is a NIV and I love the JB Phillips, New Testament in Modern English.

I don't use "study Bibles" per se, but I study the Geneva and Bishop's Bible frequently.

I use my TNIV, NRSV, and NLT and so on, with a few tools here and there.

The Bible in a few translations, good two volume commentary, a Bible dictionary, and a expository dictionary can be very useful instead of a Study Bible.

Why not:

1. Mounce's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old & New Testament Words.

2. The Expositor's Bible Commentary, Abridged Edition

3. New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology, Abridged One-Volume Edition

4. A Bible dictionary such as Tyndale Bible Dictionary (I use and old Swedish Dictionary edited by David Hedegård)

My top choices are a Scofield and a Thompson.

I consider them as 'inspirational,' as well.

Old Scofield, 67 Scofield, Scofield lll. Each one has its own set of advantages, I have a Thompson Chain but have never liked it, the print is to small, and I don't like Red Letter editions especially either.

For just generally reading, and familiar studies, I like my Cambridge text only, large print.

My favorites: NIV Study Bible, which set the standard for study Bibles, and the NKJV Thompson Chain Reference Bible. :thumbsup:

I collect Bibles, so I have several of them. That may be why I can't say which one is my favorite.

Since most of them have some sort of theological slant, for actual studying I prefer just a Bible with a good cross-reference system. I have a wide-margin NKJV and a wide-margin KJV (an old Oxford Reference Bible) that fit that bill quite nicely. I use the various "Study Bibles" as commentaries, and find them quite handy for seeing how passages are handled by proponents of various theological systems.
