What makes a Baptist a Baptist?

In some areas it is simply how deep the water is.

One needs to be aware of a church’s Statement of Faith before regularly attending.

“Baptist” in the name does not necessarily mean Baptist in their doctrine.

    Fully agree!
in addition - before the church accepts someone - esp by letter - the church should know where an individual stands on the doctrine.

I was in one church - after a member joined - the pastor realized that he believed that the rapture happened in AD 70. He was also a SS teacher!

There’s more than 31 flavors of Baptists.

I don’t think that eschatology defines a Baptist.

The church I attend has a bit of diversity of opinion.
It would preclude advanced leadership roles but depending upon a persons integrity it would generally not prevent them from teaching children.

Shortly after the 1992 elections an unbelieving (and occasionally mocking) co-worker said to me, "You must be happy with haing two Baptists in the White House."
My reply was, "What's preached from the pulpit is more important that what's on the sign out front."

I agree. Read the Statement of Faith. A red flag for me is a church website that doesn't share a clear statement of faith. I wonder what they are attempting to hide or are they hoping to remain so generic that theology is not an issue? In either case, no statement of faith is a big statement of a church that has abandoned theology in the attempt to be "relevant."
Instead, it's "contemporvent" with a dash of "growdivation." :Cool
