    1 Corinthians 13
    1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
    2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
    3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
    4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
    5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
    6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
    7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
    8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.
    9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part;
    10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.
    11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.
    12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
    13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love

    So when exactly will these tongues cease. I didnt hear anything in that whole chapter about tongues ceasing when the book of revalation was finished. In fact all that was talked about in this chapter was the importance of love. So I am going to have to assume that tongues will cease when the perfect love comes. I am going to go a step further and say that perfect love will not come until the kingdom of heaven comes. If they are to cease upon the completion of the word or anything elese I would like your proof (bible verse please)

    Revolt:

    This is a tried and true arguement for the continuation of tongues today, however, most of our Baptist brothers and sisters will deny that Paul was speaking of an event yet to be seen.

    I stated strictly by the grammer alone that the event was future and that "that which is perfect" is either Jesus or our perfection in heaven. Using either interpretation of Jesus or heavenly perfection neither of these have occured but cessationists will claim they have and that nothing in I Corinthians is acceptable to prove tongues continue.

    They will use it to show that tongues have ceased but when we draw them to the phrase "when that which is perfect is come" they seek another reference to prove their point.

    Revolt the reason I quickly spoke as I did is because under another thread in this board "tongue talker's please respond" we have already been around and around the "cessationist doctrine."

    If you check that thread you will see it already has 11 or so pages of replies.

    I posted this in the other thread, and I'll repost it here for the convenience of those who haven't waded through all those pages:
    Please note that the two following verses don't mention tongues at all:
    There is no mention of tongues there because, as discussed above, Paul knew that the true Gift of Tongues was going to be ancient history at the time that knowledge and prophecy were finally ended.
    As usual, the man knew what he was talking about. [IMG]

    Revolt, Tongues were a sign of the the Jews being scattered. This happened in 70Ad and tongues were no longer given out after that. Those who already had the gift would have had it until they died so we can assume tongues faded out (passed away on their own) between 70 an 100AD. I wonder myself if they were used after 70AD since what they were pointing to had happened. Those with the gift may have chosen not to use it at all after 70AD but not being there we can't know for sure. I know for those who speak in tongues this is hard to accept but it is what the Bible teaches. If you are speaking in tongues today, you are probably not trying to be self edifying but you are and that goes against 1 Cor 12:7. Well meaning or not if a person is using Tongues today they are not exercising a gift of the Holy Spirit.

    In Love and Truth,
    Brian

    Brian someone who has the gift of tongues cannot speak in tongues whenever they want to. The Spirit has to give the utterence. Read Acts Bro.

    Brian, I had a feeling we would get to this point. Spiritual gifts were, are, and always will be up to us to use when we want. Many people are confused about this. All the gifts are given by the same Holy Spirit and so would be implemented the same right? I think you would agree that makes sense and there is no scripture to say that some gifts we choose to use and some we have to wait for a Holy Spirit power up. So, with that in mind look at the variety of gifts and see that almost all without thought you could say are up to us to use when we want. Preaching, teaching, Helps, goverments (administrative ability) are all used by the person when they want. ( I've never seen a pastor stand up and say they wanted to preach today but the Holy Spirit didn't power their gift today - in fact most pastors won't stop speaking :D ). No reason to think other gifts are any different. That is why I know that the gift of healing is gone because if someone had it they would be clearing hospitals from the east coast to the west coast. Hope this makes sense as I am out of time to explain further.

    take care Brian,
    In Christian Love,
    Brian

    When did Paul, Peter, Jesus anybody ever go around clearing out the infermeries of their day?

    John 5

    1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
    2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes.
    3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, waiting for the moving of the waters;
    4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.
    5 A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
    6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, "Do you wish to get well?"
    7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me."
    8 Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your pallet and walk."
    9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.

    the fact that Jesus didnt heal the whole multitude there makes your Idea ridiculious.

    Also if healings have ceased also then give me bible to support this.

    I am getting tired of asking for bible :rolleyes:

    8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.
    9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part;
    10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.

    I am now issuing a challange. CAn anyone prove, with scripture, when these tongues/gifts ended.
    In 24 hours I will ask for this topic to be locked.

    Eaither it will be proved when they ceased or it will be proved that they havent.

    We shall see

    Revolt, verses On Tongues passing:

    1 Cor:

    13:8: Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

    1 Cor:

    14:20: Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
    14:21: In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
    14:22: Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

    Isaiah 28: (as referenced by Paul above – read whole 28th chapter if possible)

    28:10: For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
    28:11: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
    28:12: To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
    28:13: But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

    Hope this helps some.

    In Christ,
    Brian
