    I tend to love the old Welsh hymns and the beautiful tunes, and cannot `get into` the choruses that are sometimes sung these days. But my favourite hymn is "What a friend we have in Jesus" .

    I have two favorites: Amazing Love (or And Can It Be) by Charles Wesley; and When I Survey the Wondrous Cross by Isaac Watts, which I love for these words in particular:

    See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down; Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

    And Can It Be? would get a big thumbs up from me. Also enjoy the "heavy" hymns from early church: Jesus the Very Thought of Thee, O Sacred Head Now Wounded, Be Thou My Vision and have NO USE for 99.9% of the modern "fluff". :cool:

    [IMG] Absolutly wonderful stories behind those hymns. I got a book from Guideposts that had many stories behind the old hymns. It was a fantastic book and the stories were so awesome and full of stories of such overwhelming faith and the strenght God gave them. "It is well with my soul", was an awesome story. I can NOT imagine having all of that faith after my family had all drowned and I was the only one left! Oh my! :(

    Just a closer walk

    At Calvary ( I have a version of this by Sister Renetha, if you every want to hear the best every rendition of this song, get her CD)

    Love Lifted Me (I can still remember singing this song when I was about 4 or 5 years old... of course the words I sang were "Five fifty feet, when nothing else could do, five fifty feet" [IMG] .

    This is a hard question....I love most of Charles Wesley's hymns....esp "And Can It Be?" and "O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing" ...oh,and also "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus"

    At the top of my list are these:

    1)Jesus,What a friend for sinners

    2)Holy,Holy,Holy

    You mean I have to pick a favorite?... For song and story combined its Amazing Grace hands down!

    What Wonderous Love Is This... Is not far behind... How Sweet The Name... Is another good one... Jesus Lover Of My Soul and It Is Well With My Soul.

    As a song leader all that were mentioned give praise and glory to the Lord and that is why we sing them. The songs themselves are ageless with the thoughts and desires of the writers to express what the Lord truly means to them. Passed down to those that would lift their voices to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in song... That can be summed up in the song Blessed Assurance Jesus Is Mine!... My all time favourite is Calon Lan, and on either side of the pond, I go with Guide Me, O Thou great Jehovah,
    Pilgrim through this barren land;
    I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
    Hold me with Thy powerful hand
    Bread of heaven,
    Feed me til I want no more.

    The nearest I can come in English to Calon Lan is:

    I ask not for worldy pleasures,
    Gold and pearls, I do not seek.
    Seek I as my chiefest treasure
    A pure heart, sincere and meek

    I found this English version in an old Methodist hymn book.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    My ALL TIME favorite is "I Sing The Mighty Power of God" by Issac Watts. If you want to hear it, here s the website: http://www.cgmusic.com/workshop/watts/isingthe.htm

    My favorite line from it is
    Sometimes I have a little depression and Sunday I was a down and the pianist, who is the nicest lady and the very best pianist I have ever heard, looked over at me, smiled and tore into this song (she knew it was my favorite) for the prelude. It lifted my soul and spirit to the rafters and beyond! [IMG]
