THE US government secretly advised Scottish ministers it would be "far preferable" to free the Lockerbie bomber than jail him in Libya.

Correspondence obtained by The Sunday Times reveals the Obama administration considered compassionate release more palatable than locking up Abdel Baset al-Megrahi in a Libyan prison

It is true and they've done everything they can to keep it quiet.

Setting a convicted terrorist free appears to be preferable to Obama over protecting the citizens he is sworn to defend.

No-one comes out of this well: as I understand it, the White House assumed that al-Megrahi would be free in Scotland but not returned to Libya; the Scottish government then disabused them of that assumption by (a) freeing him and (b) bunging him on the first plane ot Libya they could find.
