Why not be the one to disagree with much of what's being said here?

I hate "Oh my God" and other such phrases because they make light of the reality of God, not because they are taking his name in vain. His name, as HE defined it, is I AM. And that, certainly, is something we all say all the time! There's really not getting around that one!

However taking God's name in vain has nothing to do with what we say, actually, but with something we claim. We claim to be CHRISTian. We have TAKEN His name when we do that, even if Christ is simply a description (which it is), meaning "the Anointed One".

So the first real example, I think, of taking His name in vain is to claim to be a Christian when you are not.

The second is something we see people like Benny Hinn and Co. do: "in the name of Jesus Christ, you are healed!/send me your money!" etc. They are definitely taking the Lord's name in vain!

In the Old Testament, to take God's name in vain would have been to claim to be a prophet of God when you weren't (penalty was death...), or to say something as a priest indicating that what you were saying was from or of the Lord when it wasn't.

Anyone who claims to be Christ (Moon) or to speak in the name of Christ (Mormon apostles etc.) but who is leading away from Scriptural teaching is taking the name of God in vain.

I am offended by casual references to God and Christ which crop up in movies, songs, conversations, etc., as though those two words meant no more than peanut butter and jelly, and I will try to make people understand they are referring to the God I worship (similar to Gib's way of dealing with it). But if they are actually taking the Lord's name in vain, they are the least of these!

In the Aleppo Codex [ 920 C.E.] in the book of Jeremiah, YHVH is written with the pointings as "YeHWaH"

    http://www.imj.org.il/eng/shrine/aleppo.html

In the Leningrad Codex [ 1009 C.E.] "YHVH" in the book of Jeremiah is writen with the pointings as"YeHoWaH"

    http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/reviews/codex.html

Some scholars who are working with the original manuscripts do not believe that YaHWeH is the Name.

Helen: bless you for bringing in that aspect, taking the name of Christ, saying "I'm Christian" just to fool others into following you and sending money to you.

Please hear this: a Christian man played golf with his boss every Saturday. His boss, Raymond, frequently said the name of our Savior in anger and frustration, you know what I mean.

So the Christian asked his boss what person he admired more than anyone else in the entire world. The boss said, "Donald Trump."

So, of course, whenever the Christian made a bad putt or whatever they call it in golf, bad drive, he would say in a putrid tone of voice, "Dooooooonald Truuuuuuuuump, that was a bad shot!"

His boss eventually got the message and quit using the Saviour's name in vile fashion to express anger, frustration, disappointment.

Cool story huh? Try it. It mite work for you too.

    AMEN Helen,

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach. (Isaiah 4.1)

    imho,
    one man=the man Christ Jesus
    bread=doctrine (teaching)
apparel=righteousness (works of righteousness as a cloak for their sin)

Attention Moderators--You may edit this if you need to. I am printing some words as example because I have no other way of telling them, you may disagree with some, feel free to do what you need to do:

When I hear it, I think of my mother who was one of the best Christians I have known. She detested any use of the name of God or any substitute usage such as "gosh" or "golly", etc. Remember, a lot of our language is nothing more than a toned down curse word. Such as d-a-r-n or Gee Whiz. My mother always felt that these were nothing more than a word made up to substitute for the curse word, so what was the difference......

You know what? I have to agree with her.

My kids grew up hearing some very 'changed' expressions from me!

What the bananas are you doing?

    Good gravy!

In short, I often substituted physical food for 'spiritual food' and the kids knew my meaning quite clearly!

I am also offended by the "Oh my God" crowd. I am also offended by the "omg" abbreviation, that is used on the Internet freely, because I KNOW the "g" does not stand for 'gosh'!

Helen, super coolness, is correct. Again. Man, somebody better hurry up and say something vaspers disagree with or vaspers will atrophy and fall asleep...

...vaspers likes: "I don't give a fig about what Benny Hinn does on tv, I refuse to watch it"

or..."What's that flippin' thing doing there on my Frappacino bottle?"

or..."Donaaaaaaald Truuuuuuump that was a dumb thing for me to say on the BB tonight!"

HooooHoooooHoooooo. Nice words can sound baaaad!

vaspers bored from lack of disunity and lack of controversy. vaspers go pick on unbeliever for a while to re-charge batteries...

I think Yosemite Sam started things in the right direction with "rissen rassen frassen"

Mork from Ork made things a bit better with "Shazbot!"

Then eventually along came Homer Simpson with "D'OH!", totally eliminating the need for any other interjection [IMG]

    LOL, these are funny.

I don't curse but I came really close one day when I slammed my knee. My coworkers loved it when I screamed, "FUDGE! FUDGE! FUDGE!" over and over.
