In 2011 after repeated lawsuits, Pennsylvania finally halted their efforts to put Jamal to death, mostly due to the fact that after such a long time witnesses are no longer available.
Maureen Faulkner Danny's widow, continues to be a strong advocate for justice in the case. She called the judges who overturned a death sentence “dishonest cowards.”
Senator Pat Toomey spoke about the case recently:“Rest assured I will now fight with every ounce of energy I have to see that Mumia Abu-Jamal receives absolutely no special treatment when he is removed from death row",
"I am heartened by the thought that he will finally be taken from the protected cloister he has been living in all these years and begin living among his own kind — the thugs and common criminals that infest our prisons.”
The Obama Administration has asked the Senate to confirm Jamal's lawyer, Debo Adegbile for assistant attorney general in the Justice Department's civil rights divisionAbu-Jamal created mayhem in court with constant interruptions while also abusing the judge and making disparaging remarks to the officer’s widow.
After Abu-Jamal was sentenced to death, Abu-Jamal continued in his attempts to antagonize the justice system while also trying to portray himself as the unfortunate victim of a racist police plot.
The pair wrote it was with this background that Adegbile threw himself into the fray in his position as acting president and director of litigation at the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund.
Through his leadership, Adegbile "fanned the racial firestorm" while alleging that the cop killer was "a symbol of the racial injustices of the death penalty," .
Eventually, the Legal Defense Fund could trumpet the fact that Abu-Jamal’s sentence was commuted to life in prison.
