81% Oppose Gas Tax Hike To Encourage Sales of More Efficient Cars

Given last year’s record-high gasoline prices and the still-fluctuating price at the pump, most Americans aren’t interested in the government tacking on any more, even in the name of fuel efficiency.

Just 10% of adults think the federal government should increase the tax on gasoline by a large amount as a way of encouraging people to buy more fuel-efficient cars, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Eighty-one percent (81%) oppose a large tax hike for that purpose, and eight percent (8%) are undecided.

thats what we need, more taxes, but the new 'change' will run this country into the toilet. More taxes aren't going to encourage anyone here to buy energy efficent cars, not when you can't pay bills and buy food for your family already. When we buy a car we have a $2,000. limit, can't buy an energy efficent car for that can you?

I had a quick question. I noticed the percentages listed don't add up to 100%. Did I miss something? I'm just wondering.

Personally, my view is the federal government should suspend any & all federal taxes on gasoline until they can come up with & implement a viable solution. I don't have a problem with fuel efficient cars, but I do have a problem with federally mandated fuel effiecient cars. I escpecially don't like it when they tell the car manufacturers that they have to produce fuel efficient cars by the year 2015. This might help in the long run, but what about now?

Half the few federal budget will be borrowed money. If you don't like a larger gas tax then how do you propose to pay it off? by Inflation?

Who is the federal government borrowing money from? China? Russia? Mexico? Great Britain?

If the government would cut their spending down, they would be able to easily regain the money that they "borrowed" from whoever. They don't need to raise taxes. Its just never a good idea, especially during an economic recession.

Wouldn't it have been better to ask how it could possibly be paid back BEFORE spending it?
