WASHINGTON -- Just over half of Americans say torture is at least sometimes justified to thwart terrorist attacks and are evenly divided over whether to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, according to a poll that underscores the challenges President Barack Obama faces in selling his terror-fighting policies.

In favor of torture----no----however I don't consider waterboarding torture so I'm not sure where that falls in the poll.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new survey.

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week -- 54 percent -- said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is "often" or "sometimes" justified. Only 42 percent of people who "seldom or never" go to services agreed, according to the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

The fallacy in the poll is that the term torture is being accepted when I'm sure most people saying yes wouldn't consider waterboarding as torture.

Little wonder half of all americans think torture is okay. Lord knows Hollywood and the corporate media pumped out enough propaganda to properly condition the whole population twice over.

Why because two guys said so? By the current liberal definition of torture any confinement of prisoners is torture. Any attempt to gain information that will save lives is torture. None of it is pleasant. But it is necessary and reasonable. In truth there is no reason to oppose it other than having sympathy for the terrorist. Which is absurd.

    It is neither.
Incorrect. We are better than that. This country has always liberated people from the hands of terrorists. It is not an American value. We should never bring ourselves down to the level of such people. It is counterproductive and barbaric. Michael Vick was imprisoned for doing less to dogs.

You didn't mention hypocritical MP. America has been telling the rest of the world to "do as we say and not as we do" for a very long time now.

It seems we have a limitless supply of hubris.

Really? Less to dogs? You really are warped in your values. He KILLED the dogs by electrocution, hanging, etc...for your information waterboarding doesn't even fit the defintion ot torture:
noun 1. the act of inflicting excruciating pain, as punishment or revenge, as a means of getting a confession or information, or for sheer cruelty.
    2. a method of inflicting such pain.
We never did anything close to this for sheer cruelty. Waterboarding isn't excrutiating pain and lasts only 20 seconds. It isn't life threatening and nobody died. It happened to 3 extreme terrorists. Get real!

    1. How do you know they were extreme terrorists? Because they confessed to such after they were waterboarded?

    2. How do you know what goes in the CIA's secret prisons?

    3. Forced confessions are what the communists and terroists use for propaganda purposes. How do you know that what you've been hearing on the tube about these confessions isn't propaganda?

Because you have the word of folks who have been caught misleading us and spending 2 billion dollars on fake news reports? Give me a break, you get real!

    1. How do you know they aren't?---but that said they do have a priority rating on terror suspects---you know al Queda #2 etc...Confessed what after waterboarding? To being terrorists or actually having viable info!
    2. How do you know what goes on in CIA's secret prisons?
    3. These weren't used for forced confessions---they were used to obtain information on terror plots! Get real!

I'll take whatever we have been doing(not torture) since 9/11 as good enough for me. My country has been safe using these tactics. Now you want to change them because you think it's torture to subject knwon terroist(all 3) to waterboarding.

The burden of proof is yours. YOU made the positive assertion.

    1. What MP said.

    2. I asked you first.

    3. How do you know?

Little history lesson. 1953 Iran. The CIA recruited Iranians to act as communists and carry out a terror campaign against the Irianian government in order to overthrow it so the U.S. and Britian could control Iran's oil.

Barack Obama is the first president to actually admit that in public BTW.

1963 the U.S. joint chiefs of staff came up with the bright idea (plan) to blow up airplanes full of college students and stage a fake terror campaign and blame it on Cuba in order to gain the consent of the American people to wage war on Cuba.

The plan was called "Operation Northwoods".

The United States entered the Spanish American war because of sensational newspaper propaganda put out by William Randolph Hearst. Despite the fact that there was no evidence that the Maine was blown up by a Spanish mine.

Rulers and governments have always relied on "outside threats" and propaganda to control their own populations, gain consent to wage wars and restrict liberties at home. Even our own government has shown it has no qualms about lying and using propaganda and terrorists in order to gain our consent to wage wars on others.

    So who's really real here?

Oh yeah! One more question. How many times was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi killed? I counted five how about you?

Vicks sentencing was ridiculous. Terrorists do not waterboard. That would be ssisy work to them. They cut off limbs and behead people. Waterboarding is not on the same level.

We haven't. When we start videotaping sawing off heads, then you can complain about us bringing ourselves down to their level. And I'll agree with you.

Burden of proof to prove what?

CIA Director Michael Hayden confirmed today what ABC news reported months ago…The US waterboarded a grand total of…3 people.

Those subjected to waterboarding were suspected Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and senior al Qaeda leaders Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, Hayden said at the hearing on threats to the United States. He said waterboarding has not been used in five years

If this is accurate, it probably stems from a values gap. People who attend church regularly are more likely to value life and therefore are more likely to be willing to take steps to protect it under the idea that a thousand lives are not worth one life. People who do not regularly attend churches are driven by an entirely different value system that does not attach as high a priority to the value of life.
